You Do You Review: Rom-Com With No Spark and Passion

The runtime of the movie is 99 minutes. It is dubbed in English and also has subtitles.

You Do You Review Contains No Spoilers

Merve aspires to be a fashion designer in the Netflix film, You Do You. However, her mother, Nerva, a retired journalist, wants her daughter to work in a business firm. One day, a businessman named Anil takes over their building. Merve decides to get a good job to afford money to save her neighbourhood.

Merve came up with a new dating app idea called ‘Soulmate’. Without knowing that Anil is the man who has decided to buy her building, she works for him for her app and to achieve her fashion designing game. The duo start working as professionals but eventually, the cupid strikes. Will Merve get what she wants? You get answers in the end.

The basic elements of rom-com movies are either a girl and guy quarrelling the first time they meet for some reason, a girl meeting a guy on holiday, in a new company, or she realises her childhood friend is the one. For the You Do You movie on Netflix, the makers have used the former style to bring Merve and Anil together.

You Do You Review 1

The duo stumble upon each other at a coffee shop. Anil accidentally pushes Merve, and the coffee spills on her white pants. The two have a small argument where Merve is loud, and Anil displays arrogance in his conversation. However, when Merve finds out that Anil is the one who will provide financial aid for her dating app, she does everything to impress him. Anil, an emotionally unavailable bad-boy billionaire, invests in the app for fun.

The movie was fun to watch until here, and then it kept getting silly. When Merve and Anil get closer, you don’t feel any excitement. The characters lack chemistry. Our leading lady has to do so much in less time that neither her professional side makes you happy nor her love life excites you. The makers have kept a secret about Anil’s character. But when that comes out, the effect is inconsequential.

Another ridiculous aspect of the Turkish film You Do You is the whole dating app idea. The makers have made that the main base to help their leading stars meet. But if one uses logic, what’s new in a dating app where people can use animal masks to cover their faces and bond with conversations first and then eventually can show their faces to each other? That’s just some weird animal-human fantasy.

You Do You Review 2

As Merve, actor Ahsen Eroğlu is full of energy, very talkative and not at all shy (like she claims in one of the scenes). There is no mystery to Merve as a person. She’s almost always on the screen, talking too much. Actor Burcu Türünz is charming and sophisticated as Anil. He plays the bad-boy billionaire to perfection.

You Do You Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, the new Turkish release on Netflix is the story we have seen before. It has a promising start but keeps getting frivolous further. The romantic comedy lacks spark, passion and a good chemistry between the lead couple.

The movie is now streaming on Netflix.
