Wind Breaker is an action-heavy Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Satoru Nii. It first launched in January 2021 on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket manga website. It has since become famous among fans. As of March 2025, the series has released 21 tankōbon volumes. Its success reflects its steady rise in popularity and consistent fan engagement.

The story follows a group of strong-willed teens who are part of a vigilante-like group protecting their town. Here, there are themes of brotherhood, justice, and intense combat. Its gripping plotlines and sharp character dynamics have earned it a dedicated following both in Japan and internationally.

After the manga’s success, Wind Breaker was adapted into an anime by studio CloverWorks. The anime made its debut from April 5 to June 28, 2024, as part of the new Super Animeism Turbo programming block.

It was directed by Toshifumi Akai, with a script by Hiroshi Seko. Their work brings the manga’s gritty atmosphere to life. Taishi Kawakami provided the character designs, while Ryo Takahashi composed the energetic soundtrack. The first season featured “Boyz” by SixTONES as its opening theme, and “It’s myself” by shytaupe as the ending.

Following the eager reception of the first season, a second season was quickly greenlit and premiered on April 4, 2025, on the same programming block.

Today’s episode begins with Nagato telling his side of the story and recalling the moment things changed for him for the worse. It was right after his middle school graduation ceremony when he witnessed a skirmish while walking down the road. Some delinquents were beating a kid, and he tried to stop them. Needless to say, Nagato could not do anything and got hurt himself.

This is where, unexpectedly, Natori came in to save him and the child. Natori also complimented Nagato and asked him to join his team, as, apparently, he needs reliable people like Nagato. However, when Nagato joined KEEL, he realised what kind of trouble he had landed himself in. When he went to KEEL’s headquarters, he saw how the stronger members beat and bullied the weaker members into submission.

No one is allowed to leave the group once they arrive there. On top of that, every member is forced to collect money either by bullying others or resorting to crimes like theft. This is how this group managed to become so big and operate with so many members. Nagato thus becomes extremely grateful and regretful that he got his friends involved in such a scenario and even landed Bofurin members in trouble.

Today’s episode was heartwarming because it showcased how Sakura has changed for the better. Previously, he was fighting without a cause and hence was like a beast without a leash. Now, he has more responsibilities, and his affection towards his teammates makes him much more cautious when he fights. There was a time when he was all alone, and now it is not that anymore.

I really like today’s episode, but also feel that there was not much going on. We were just given a hint that the main mastermind behind KEEL might be someone else, and we are left at that. Maybe the next episode will have more elements to explore.
