Why was Alex Schwazer Banned From the Olympics? Was the Ban Ever Lifted?

Running for my Truth: Alex Schwazer is a four-part sports docu-series that explores the controversial life of Olympic gold medalist Alex Schwazer. The documentary is directed by Massimo Cappello and has an average runtime of 45-55 minutes per episode.

What Happened to Alex Schwazer?

From what we know after watching the documentary series, Alex Schwazer is an Italian racewalker who won the gold medal during the 2008 Olympic event. However, it was not just his sporting calibre, but also a plethora of controversial doping scandals that remained infamous throughout his career.

As per the mentioned events in the documentary,  just before the London Olympics, Schwazer tested positive for, a banned performance-enhancing substance. Based on this result, the Italian Racewalker was banned for a set period of time, before competing in future events.

Schwazer immediately admitted to using the drug and expressed his remorse for his actions. He also claimed that he had taken the substance on his own without any knowledge or assistance from his coaches or teammates.

After serving his suspension, the documentary features Schwazer returning to competition in 2016, hoping to participate in the Rio Olympics. However, just weeks before the games, he tested positive again for the substance during a routine out-of-competition test. This time, Schwazer claimed that he had been set up and that someone had tampered with his urine sample.

He filed a lawsuit against the Italian Olympic Committee and the World Anti-Doping Agency alleging that the positive test was a result of a conspiracy against him.

Throughout the documentary, we get to see the implications of such lawsuits, and the impact that they had on Schwzer’s sporting career. Moreover, the docuseries also takes a brief look at the ample amount of evidence on his side, which was debated in the court.

According to the docuseries, an Italian court acquitted Schwazer of the doping charges, citing insufficient evidence to prove his guilt. The court also ruled that the tampering of Schwazer’s urine sample was highly probable and that there was no way to exclude the possibility of third-party interference. The court’s decision was a major victory for Schwazer, who had always maintained his innocence and fought to clear his name.

As per the ending of the documentary series, Alex Schwazer is still fighting the legal rebuttal after being acquitted by the Italian court. Moreover, the complexity of the case and the judgment against WADA led him to skip the Tokyo Olympics. Furthermore, the series also reveals that the racewalker might miss out on the Paris Olympics as well.
