What If Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: Nebula and the Nova Corps, Sounds About Right

The show is produced by Marvel Studios Animation, with A. C. Bradley serving as head writer and Bryan Andrews primarily directing. The show’s narrator is Jeffrey Wright playing the role of the Watcher. The rest of the cast includes Cynthia McWilliams and Mick Wingert as Gamora and Tony Stark. We have Hayley Atwell and Lake Bell as Peggy Carter and Natasha Romanoff, respectively. 

Episode 1 is titled “What If… Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?”.

A new addition to this season is a young Mohawk woman called Kahhori.

What If Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

What If Season 2 Episode 1 gives us an alternate Nebula story. In this one, we see our blue cyborg hero be a part of the Nova Corps. In this universe, Ronan betrayed Thanos and took Gamora, leaving Nebula behind. She was blessed by the Nova Prime inviting her to be a part of their troop. Living in Xandar, Nebula swore to serve the Nova Corps sincerely.

However, Xandar too was not far from the reach of Ronan’s powers. In a desperate measure, we get to know that Nova Prime took the call to isolate the planet for its safety by putting up a planetary shield. This also resulted in isolation and, five years down the line we are in a time where people are at their worst in Xandar.

What If Season 2 Episode 1 opens with the death of Yondu. We get to know the relationship Yondu and Nebula share and, see the latter hunt for the person responsible for Yondu’s death. Not to miss that her other teammates also were looking for the same but, in all the wrong direction.

Nebula finds Yondu’s weapon where she gets to see a set of schematics that she believes is something Yondu died to protect. Soon enough Nebula receives a call from Prime Nova, who warns her that Yondu was into some dark force-business which got him killed and, now Xander possibly has till dawn to save itself. She trusts Nebula to help Xander.

Nebula visits the casino-runner and the person whose hand is in every pot- Howard. While inquiring about the schematics from Howard, one of the latter’s employees walked in and revealed what the schematics meant. It included the source code to the planetary shield surrounding Xander. Nebula gets her suspicion confirmed that someone is trying to bring down the shield but, to know more she would have to access the shield and who better than someone who has already broken that rule, right?

Thus, Nebula lands up in a correctional facility to meet Yon-Rogg. She breaks him out, so he can help her around the Xanderian security network. The two soon reach the mainframe of the core. When Nebula downloads the source files, she is attacked by Yon-Rogg, who steals them and lets her drown.

Nebula somehow manages to escape. But when she comes to her senses, she sees that it is the Prime Nova who is behind it all. She plans to create an invasion set-up and welcome Ronan into Xander. Nebula is hit and tortured to die but, she escapes by jumping off the building to the far ground.

Nebula seeks help from Howard, Groot and the crew. She moves them to save Xander and, together they form a team to take down Prime Nova. On visiting Prime Nova, the shields seemed to already open but, Nebula always knew due to her instincts that is Prime Nova who is behind it all which is why she put some twists in a code and manipulated them to close the shield, destroying Ronan’s ships in the process.

Ultimately, Prime Nova tries to run away but, Nebula hunts her down. During their fight, the former meets her demise through a deadly fall at the end of What If Season 2 Episode 1.
