Watch Out We’re Mad (2022) Review: Hilarity Gone Wrong

A buddy comedy from Italy was remade in Watch Out We’re Mad. It just shows you that you never know what to expect when Netflix announces a new title for release. There’s always something up their sleeves (or not?). The cast includes Edoardo Pesce, Alessandro Roja, and Alessandra Mastronardi in pivotal roles. Again, the premise sounds bizarre, but it could have worked well enough. Let’s dig deeper.

Watch Out We’re Mad Review Doesn’t Contain Any Spoilers –

Watch Out We’re Mad is a Goofy Revival of the ’70s Classic

I’ll tell it straight, Watch Out We’re Mad is a complete revolution of the buddy comedy genre. It seems somewhat familiar on paper, but certain things should never be messed with. And that’s what Netflix did. Watch Out We’re Mad looks set to be high octane, switch-off-your-brain type of movie.

Watch Out We’re Mad (2022) Review: Hilarity Gone Wrong

Film and television have a long history of repurposing prior work into new versions, but the most successful of these remakes seem to be cult hits. Watch Out We’re Mad looks like a flyaway – and with Netflix behind it, who’s got their ear to the ground with what their audiences are looking for in the future?

Making a remake of what is arguably a genre-defining film seems a bit moronic, almost as if it’s some joke. Nonetheless, here we are with another redux far too soon after the last one. It’s one that I might like to think about for a minute to use parlance from another film that had an Italian remake recently.

Where does Watch Out We’re Mad Go Amiss?

This movie shows us how big business, dirty dealing and dodgy debts play their part in the death of an entire industry, but also how a family sticks together to ensure they don’t fall too hard. The acting looks good. I like the director’s previous work and the story written by the same guy behind three of my favourite films of all time.

There are various ups and downs in car chases and some nasty bad guys to contend with, but it’s always good vs evil no matter what. Watch out! For sure! This film is everything a fan of this genre could want. I’m not saying that the plot and characters will blow you away, but they don’t have to with the amount of action on offer here. There is so much going on in this movie that it feels like a whole host of individuals had their input.

Watch Out We’re Mad (2022) Review: Hilarity Gone Wrong

Watch Out We’re Mad (2022) is trying to tap into a market that’s becoming disillusioned with Hollywood and remakes of 20-year-old movies. But it seems unlikely that the film will be able to capture the same spirit and atmosphere of the original while updating all the violence and hostility.

The Remake of Watch Out We’re Mad Could Have Been Retold Differently

The reboot follows the same plotline but features more pistols and machine guns instead of fists. The new characters are not typical characters. They are vigilantes, self-righteous criminals, who sometimes willingly commit crimes themselves to fight even worse criminals.

Watch Out We’re Mad (2022) is a mainstream comedy starring Hollywood has-beens trying to jump on the remake bandwagon by retelling a 20-year-old cult movie. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the same spirit and humour as the 70s classic.

Watch Out We’re Mad (2022) Review: Hilarity Gone Wrong

The original film was a comedy road-trip flick with more knockabouts than high jinks. The pair of outrageously named mismatched crossroad racing participants, Ben and Kid, played by Bud Spencer and Terence Hill, were trying to get their hands on an ancient dune buggy that had been bequeathed to them through the race. However, the townsfolk were determined to protect their red Puma dune buggy with a yellow top and tried to stop the two juvenile delinquents from taking it away.

Stream It or Skip It?

This is one of those films that fails to improve on the original. You will be sorely disappointed if you expect a retelling of the 1970s classic where two protagonists go around trying to collect a bounty from three bad guys. There are some funny moments but don’t expect anything more extraordinary.

Watch Out We’re Mad is currently streaming on Netflix.

SUMMARY

We have come a long way since 1970, and it’s time to create something new based on old values. But, Watch Out We're Mad fails in that aspect.

  1. Trying to remake a bud Spencer and Terence Hill movie is like trying to remake laurel and hardy or Abbott and Costello. It’s doomed to fail because you won’t have the chemistry.
