Waffles Plus Mochi’s Restaurant Review: International Food Tour Takes Off With a Jazzy Appeal for Kids

After sprinkling their initial nutritional literacy over the previous season, Waffle Plus Mochi’s Restaurant takes us on a world tour to dig into the sundry food cultures on their magical flying cart again. The puppet duo knocks on the doors of many global chefs, exacting recipes and lesser-known backgrounds of some of our favorite food items to run their own animated restaurant.

The food adventure saga of six episodes, with each episode’s runtime of 20 mins, is joined by the former first lady Michelle Obama, playing the role of Mrs. O. The restaurant started serving its exquisite and quirky food menu on October 17, 2022, on Netflix and has Sarah Berman and David Bizzaro voicing the titular chefs respectively, with the overall concept birthed by Erika Thormahlen and Jeremy Konner.

Netflix describes the series as:

Food-loving friends Waffles and Mochi get cooking in their very own restaurant, where hungry customers come to feast on flavors from all over the world!

-Waffles + Mochi’s Restaurant Review Contains Mild Spoilers-

Leading didacticism with glittery dance breaks, Waffles and Mochi are accompanied by Mrs. O (Obama) and their two other human colleagues Danny and Yuki, other than Bella, the animated bell; Steve, the spectacled mop, and Busy, the eccentric bee as their other teammates.

Belonging to the 21st century, the titular characters run their restaurant in an age when people easily fall into a sedentary life led by the packaged, instantly prepared food options. In such a time, the two become our guides into the historical origins of the world’s food, pertaining to some of our beloved choices like honey, bread, cheese, chocolate, vanilla, and fruits.

While the former installment of the series was more focused on herbs, spices, and vegetables, this one switches the gears to include foods that are widely adored by a general majority. Scooping their surprising natural sources, they convey uncelebrated facts of the same.

With Mrs. O dropping by strictly at either the beginning or the end of the episodes, the prime highlight of the show is not the glamorous appearances throughout its journey, but rather the information they seek to deliver. Anyhow, you can’t expect kids to know each famous personality (like Padma Lakshmi and more) they come across in the show but you can hope for them to be inspired by the truths of their favorite edibles.

Animations, the vibrant outlook of the restaurant, the travels, and the repetitive short comic reliefs on the part of the main characters are attractive appeals to the young ones watching the show. Episode 3 in particular is one of the most engaging trips of all, bringing up the debate of the two all-time classic flavors – Chocolate Vs Vanilla – in a showdown. Turns out, they aren’t too different than each other as we’d perceived them to be, and it’s all thanks to Waffles and Mochi’s trips around the world.

Waffles Plus Mochi’s Restaurant: Worth the Watch?

It’s an easy-to-digest food-travel trivia delivery that isn’t specifically meant for kids alone, especially since there are a lot of facts relayed that many of us adults may not be familiar with. If you like tracing the history of various foods, in terms of their geographical origins as well, in a palatable presentation that doesn’t come across as a spiritless matter-of-fact fashioned monologue, then you should keep an eye out for this series.

Nevertheless, its episodes do have a tendency of becoming a bit overbearing for grownups after a point because each one of them follows the expected identical track, keeping kids’ attention spans in mind. As a result, binge-watching all episodes in a single sitting may vex you a little, but not the kids of course. Waffles and Mochi’s stories are like a nutritional fact bomb enveloped in a synergetic gift wrap of Sesame Street‘s Muppets style and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse‘s mission course. Having watched the former first lady yet again as the ultimate support system for not only the show but also its leading chefs, it’s safe to affirm her as proficient in children’s TV.
