There are so many absurd things on the internet, but the VOID music video truly takes it to a whole new level. This whole video is based on the aesthetic Melanie Martinez’s album, PORTALS, gives. The moment she makes her way out of the human heart, things change drastically. If hell were to have looked like something, it would have looked like that. In her video, we see her dance before falling to the floor. Since the song is about self-loathing and feeling empty, there is a host of metaphors we could get into in the video.

She has been making her way through the army of people that look like her, trying to kill her. It is clear now that she is actually trapped inside her own body, trying to escape from a place that has constantly been suffocating her. Even though everything around her is so abundant, it becomes clear that she is alluding to how the world around her is filled with things she wants and needs, but there is still this emptiness inside her that she cannot shake.
In order to escape from here, she also rides on a phallus-like structure (like on an animal), before cutting off the top. This can be interpreted as the artist trying to escape male fantasy and the restrictions that patriarchy has put on her and instead raze it to create something incredibly beautiful in its destruction. Her visuals may be disturbing, but this writer feels like the only reason she made it so gruelling to look at so those who cannot stomach her visuals may not be able to stomach her melancholy.

– Trigger Warning: Strobe Effects, Gore, Disturbing Imagery –
Fans of her music have taken to the platform, commenting just exactly how brilliant her work is in this. Apart from the gore and blood, the imagery is a larger metaphor. Some have described this to be the best visuals ever, while others share how brilliant the artist looks while holding a sword in her hand. Fans are truly dedicated to her craft, letting her express her feelings in ways that most artists couldn’t even imagine.
