Velma Episode 3 and 4 Review: Where Is This Show Even Going?

Charlie Grandy, Howard Klein and Sam Register also serve as the executive producers. It is produced by Kaling International, 3 Arts Entertainment and Warner Bros. The third episode of the series is titled ‘Velma Kai’ and the fourth episode is called ‘Velma Makes a List’. Both episodes are 25-30 minutes long.

Velma Episode 3 and 4: Can No Longer Give the Show ‘Benefit of Doubt’

The pilot episodes of Velma were not actually bad when you watch the latest two episodes of the show and realize that the show is clearly going down the drain. I did try to give the show a ‘benefit of doubt’ moment but, does not look like any of that has helped because the series is constantly trying to be everything our childhood show wasn’t!

In the third episode of the series, we finally get to explore the Velma and Daphne angle that kept everyone annoyingly at the edge. However, without really pulling the existing fandom into the show by being sex and gender positive the episode showed the confusing and weird nature of the show. Adding to that we have the fourth episode which sure does keep the mystery alive but, oh-so half-heartedly.

We see another murder taking place in the span of the latest episodes and due to that, Fred is out of jail. Meanwhile, Daphne and Velma have also rekindled their friendship and, now, seemingly, all of them are working together to catch the murderer out there who is responsible for killing ‘only hot girls’. With the show reinforcing that our titular character is not attractive, we have her taking the lead in his investigation.

Velma Episode 3 and 4: Final Thoughts

What is HBO Max’s Velma trying to do? Where is it trying to go? Well, it is as unclear to us as it is to you. Mindy Kaling is responsible for making one of the most enjoyable and funny shows out there (I mean, look at how The Sex Lives of College Girls turned out to be, right? Except for how the second season ended, of course). However, with this adult animated series, the makers are taking weird and unnecessary turns leaving a sour taste in everyone’s mouths.

The themes the show is trying to explore might be very relevant and important but, the way it is going about it is visibly painful and inappropriate. Overall, the third and the fourth episodes of Velma were disappointing and for the viewers out there, I am sure it was demotivating enough for them to not engage more with the show. The series isn’t getting good reviews and ratings and only time will tell if it can even finish its first run.

Meanwhile, you can now watch the latest episodes of the show on HBO Max.
