Vanished Ending Explained
The series starts with long-distance lovers Alice Monroe and Tom Parker meeting for a romantic getaway in Paris. On their way to Arles on the train, Tom excuses himself momentarily and never returns, leaving Alice scared and confused. Unable to wrap her head around his disappearance, she immediately decides to look into his whereabouts before he vanished and eventually tries to report him missing, but the police are sceptical of her account and refuse to help her.
In the aftermath, she meets Hélène Lando, an investigative journalist who agrees to help Alice on her quest and suggests that Tom might have more to hide than he was letting on. Alice looks further into Tom’s work associates, which suggests that everything wasn’t as honest as he was letting on. Eventually, due to poking her nose where it doesn’t belong, Alice ends up becoming a suspect for the murder of the train conductor, resulting in her going on the run.

Who is Tom?
Eventually, through her investigations, Alice realises that Tom was involved in a human trafficking operation that targeted children in the guise of a humanitarian organisation. It’s a shocking reveal that leaves Alice stunned, unable to accept that the kind of empathetic man that she fell in love with would turn out to be so cruel.
We also eventually learn that Tom was an undercover agent who was in way over his head and too deeply enmeshed in the conspiracy and corruption. Even though he was aware of everything taking place around him, he did nothing to stop it and was trapped by all the wrong choices that he made.
What happens to Alice?
In the aftermath of the reveal, Alice’s name is cleared, and she spends a romantic night with Tom after he profusely apologises to her. However, in the morning, she chooses to leave him without any confrontation and leaves only a note. Having taken revenge on the betrayal and deception that she faced, this is how she reclaimed her independence and agency, and it turns out to symbolise the regaining of control of her life once again.
