Urusei Yatsura Episode 10 Review and Recap – Does Ataru Care?

This was hands down one of the best episodes of this anime yet. And the best part does not come in the first half but in the second half.
The first half begins with the usual comedic tones of this anime, where we meet some new characters. It is the parent-teacher meeting day, and Ataru’s mom has come down to visit the teacher in school. But she is not alone as she is joined by Shinobu’s mom.
But suddenly, an ox-drawn carriage arrives, and there, we see Mendo’s mom, who does not interact with anyone other than her butler and son. Her carriage gets crushed by a spaceship, from where comes out Lum’s mom, who speaks a whole different language altogether.
Here hilarity ensues when Lum mistranslates Mendo’s mom’s accusations to her mother by suggesting Mendo’s hand is getting offered for Lum’s mom. This entire scene is missed by Ataru, who stays asleep the whole time.
Now comes the second part, which, again, starts normally with Ataru complaining about Lum’s presence in his life. He does not appreciate that Lum comes every morning to wake him up and accompanies him to school. Mendo even tells Ataru that if he does not value Lum anymore someday, she might leave him, but Ataru dismisses him and claims it would be great if that happens. That night Lum tries to tell Ataru something, but he again disregards her and goes to sleep.

The next day Lum is nowhere to be found. She doesn’t come to wake Ataru up or accompany him to school. Even though he slowly gets worried, he says nothing in front of anyone.
After almost three days, he finally reveals Lum’s disappearance to Mendo, and he then uses his police force to find her but to no avail. Ataru gets visibly disturbed and even runs around the entire town searching for her with a miniature doll resembling Lum that she left behind for him.

It is only later that we get to know that Lum went to her spaceship temporarily to renew her permit to stay on earth. The doll she left had a recorder implanted in it, and with it, she accidentally heard Ataru crying about her leaving him without saying anything.
My shipper heart could not handle such a moment. I was absolutely giddy the whole time and had the biggest smile when Lum returned.
Verdict
I loved the episode. Especially when Ataru tries his best to conceal his happiness by mocking Lum for returning, but we viewers know just how much he treasures her company. Watch the anime on HIDIVE if you haven’t yet.
