Under the Queen’s Umbrella picks up the Joseon dynasty as its backdrop in its upcoming novel season on Netflix this October. Directed by Kim Hyung-sik and written by Park Ba-ra, the k-drama stars Kim Hye-soo, Kim Hae-sook, and Choi Won-young as its protagonists.
The extremely short and precise trailer released by The Swoon on October 4, 2022, foregrounds Queen Im Hwa-ryeong’s (Kim Hye-soo) struggle in preparing her sons to lead the royal household. Their troublemaking tactics don’t let her off easy and exacerbate her dilemma.

Netflix’s official synopsis of the show reads:
A spirited queen tries to rein in her rowdy sons in order to make one of them the next king of Joseon, while her competitors vie to snatch the throne.

The trailer of Under the Queen’s Umbrella promises a strong female-centric narrative with women leading the storyline and being stuck in a hierarchy that generates its own line of politics along the way. A new declaration that “the prince who becomes the friend of the Crown Prince will be able to take his place”, again stirs up new lows of hypocrisy.

Queen Im Hwa-ryeong’s reputation can’t hold out for long and with the other women of the kingdom standing on the opposing end of her story, all she has is but herself in the end. After all, “who will protect (her) children, if not (her)?” No matter what happens, she is ready to reach out to all extremes if necessary and outmaneuver her path ridden with obstacles.
With a fierce tagline, “The Queen fights the storm for her children”, the forthcoming series will prove that Queen Im Hwa-ryeong is a force to reckon with. Brace yourself for the queen’s dutiful fury.
Kim Hye-soo was last seen playing the role of Shim Eun-seok in February 2022, in the legal drama Juvenile Justice, thereby garnering international acclaim as well.
