Under the Queen’s Umbrella: Will There Be a Season 2 For the Sageuk Kdrama?

Under the Queen’s Umbrella finale (슈룹) aired on December 4, 2022, Sunday, and even Twitter is still raving about the episode, as fans simply can’t bring themselves to accept the fact that they won’t be seeing the royal family together on weekends anymore. The Korean historical dram or ‘sageuk’ starred Kim Hye-soo, Choi Won-young, Kim Have-sook, Moon Sang-min and more and had an episode run of 16 chapters over the season. Initially picking up as a period comedy, the series soon amalgamated various branches of cinematic genres, and introduced us to both – characters we fell head over heels for and the ones we couldn’t stop loathing.

With the premiere of Under the Queen’s Umbrella episode 16, the series end and farewell was consolidated and fans instantly shared their experience of watching the drama the past few weeks, and loving every bit of it. Ending on a positive note for the beloved major characters, the series came to a perfect close, leaving our eyes teary, in hoped to see the cast together again.

Will There Be Under the Queen’s Umbrella Season 2?

It’s highly likely that you’re headed this way to figure out if the series will be coming back for another run or not. And, as the question of the hour is raised, the answer may not be one that pleases you in the end. It’s a well-known fact that most Korean series aren’t renewed for their second seasons and the writers aim at wrapping up the storyline within the constricted, yet sufficient time frame of a single season.

The recently completed series also gave us the much-needed happy ending we had been asking for these characters since the beginning. Therefore, no reason lies in sight for the story to be picked up again for another ride. Our only chances of seeing the show again is if the writers pick on a refurbished look for the title, with new characters and cast and start anew since the ratings soared high for this release ever since its premiere.

Another possibility is if the story picks up on the next generation of the royal family, especially with Grand Heir Won-seon back in the palace and Crown Princess Cheong-ha being pregnant as well. However, the beauty of the plot and its ending is in the last image left for us to keep in our hearts as Queen Hwa-ryeong holds out the umbrella for her grandson, hinting at how she’ll continue looking out for the future royal generations as well. Its heartfelt quotient gets accentuate by the mere idea that it’s the last thing that the series leaves open to interpretation for us.
