Under the Queen’s Umbrella: All to Know About the Fresh Take on Korean Historical Dramas

Being slated as a black comedy historical drama, Under the Queen’s Umbrella is set to premiere on both tvN and Netflix later this week. Following the Joseon dynasty and its supreme issue of the throne, the series has been created by Studio Dragon and written by Park Ba-ra, with Kim Hyung-sik as the director.

Its leading cast has been seen in several instances bearing headstrong characters onscreen, with the upcoming series only adding to that portfolio. Netflix has been on the go when it comes to establishing its K-drama repertoire, and period dramas have a separate fanbase all to themself. With that being said, we’re all looking forward to the latest addition to that list. Let’s take a quick look at all things we already know about the drama.

The main cast of the show is led by Kim Hye-soo as Queen Im Hwa-ryeong, Kim Hae-sook as Queen Dowager, and Choi Won-young as King Lee Ho. Others joining the show include Moon Sang-min as Grand Prince Sung-nam, Bae In-hyuk as Crown Prince, Yoo Seon-ho as Grand Prince Gye-seong, Kang Chan-hee as Prince Ui-seong. Kim Ga-eun as Royal Consort So-yong Tae, Ok Ja-yeon as Royal Consort Gwi-in Hwang, Kim Min-ki as Prince Bo-gum, Woo Jung-won as Royal Consort Gwi-in Go and many more.

Under the Queen’s Umbrella Plot/Storyline

Envisioning the position taken on by the women residing in the Joseon era, this Korean drama will take us through the struggles and challenges faced by them, especially when concerned with the questions of the throne. While the kings are often seen taking the lead in most kingdoms, women are left behind to cater to their needs or pay attention to the upbringing of their future potential heirs.

On a similar note, an ambitious queen must go through it all to make the most of her troublemaking princes’ reputation and identity before others swoop in to seize their chances.

The official Netflix synopsis of the series reads:

A spirited queen tries to rein in her rowdy sons in order to make one of them the next king of Joseon, while her competitors vie to snatch the throne.

The first episode of Under the Queen’s Umbrella will be broadcasted on tvN and Netflix on October 15, 2022. Subsequent episodes will air every Saturday, and Sunday, during the 21:10 (KST) slot. Check out the official trailer of the first season below.
