Two (2021) Review: Pablo Derqui, Marina Gatell and Duality

Two, or Dos, is a psychological horror film directed by Mar Targarona and stars Pablo Derqui and Marina Gatell in lead roles. The movie has a runtime of 71 minutes.

Netflix describes the movie as:

Two strangers awaken to discover their abdomens have been sewn together, and are further shocked when they learn who’s behind their horrifying ordeal.

– Two review does not contain spoilers –

From the moment Two movie starts, you’re in for an uncomfortable and horrifying ride. The only thing I could think of was, what the hell am I watching? So, as the description says, the movie is about two strangers who wake up stitched together. Yep. Stitched together. There are many moments where you see and hear stitches being pulled at because, well, the protagonists are scared and confused.

It is obviously a mystery. As in, a mystery of who and why. Who is doing this to them and why is this happening? Also, why them?! The movie has a dream-like feel to it and every moment that the pair spend doing normal, mundane things is filled with tension and hurt. And also, awkward laughing. This is such a bonkers movie. As more and more secrets start coming out, the truth starts to become clearer and muddier.

Two 2021 isn’t a movie that has hardcore action scenes. This is a movie about body horror, lies, deceit and is horrifying in its own right. Think Gerald’s Game. So, this is confined to one room and feels very suffocating. Add to that all the odd things that you can think of can happen – yep, that happens. Things that you really don’t want to think about in your wildest dreams are what this movie shows us.

Two movie is also a philosophical movie. Grappling with the notions of duality, the movie plays with how everything in this world comes in twos and what that entails to our lives and the universe in general. Since it forms the basis for the movie, I won’t go too deep into it in my Two review, but just… it’s a disturbing watch without a happy ending.

The protagonists are just so good in this awfully claustrophobic and shocking movie. If you thought you’ve seen everything when it comes to the depravity of mankind, then you really haven’t. That being said though, Two movie isn’t going to be for everyone. Body horror aside, the movie is slow and uncomfortable and for those who don’t like movies that will make you think, this isn’t going to be it.

Summing up: Two

Two is uncomfortable and will make you think of the bigger things in life. It’s short enough to not become boring, considering there’s only so much you can do in a single room. It will make you squirm and introduce you to concepts that can be a bit hard to grasp. However, the end comes quick and easy and might just leave you a bit dissatisfied.

Two, or Dos, is streaming on Netflix.
