Trapped In A Dating Sim Episode 9 Review- A Mental Conflict

We ended the last episode with Olivia confronting Leon about his treatment of hers. She wanted to know why he treated her as a fragile creature that needed to be protected from the cruel world. In her eyes, Leon is just a random guy who has taken an interest in her for reasons he would not disclose, leading her to imagine horrible things about herself and Leon. However, what is Leon supposed to tell her? That he takes care of her because he is the one who took one of her life’s goals from her without her even knowing? That she lost her protagonist status in the game because of him?

Let’s just say that things are complicated in the show right now. Leon had made two relations so far that he could call close, one with Olivia and another with Angelica. Now he has gone away to take care of these sky pirates against Angelica’s wishes and is at loggerheads with Olivia. Even worse is the fact that he is stuck on the ship with two of the prince’s friends, whom he doesn’t appreciate. One could say that he made these things hard for himself, but Leon didn’t exactly force himself into this game. He was practically thrust into it.

However, there is a lot of conflict within his mind from the very start due to his status as a “mob”. Is he just supposed to stand by and watch bad things happen to people who don’t deserve it even though he has the power to stop it? Just because he is a mob character, is he supposed to follow the game’s storyline even if the protagonist and timeline have shifted? Is Leon to blame for all the suffering that Olivia and Angelica have incurred? Where does Marie fit into all this? This episode wasn’t exactly able to answer all of these questions, but it offered an interesting perspective on the same.

In between the underwhelming and short mech fights, we saw the two obnoxious prince-lings fight for their honour and the safety of Olivia, proving once and for all that despite Leon’s hatred for them, they aren’t exactly bad people. They are simple Otome game love interests who are playing their parts as being devoted to the main character. It is just that the main character is different this time around, causing Olivia, Leon, and Angelica a lot of trouble. The change brought to this world just by Leon existing is extremely interesting and forms a big part of the intrigue of this series.

Other than the story, there were also some other notable things about this episode. The music was great overall, as even the most underwhelming battle scenes at least got to sound pleasant. The sky pirate plotline was mostly a means to an end, but it did serve its end very well. Trapped In A Dating Sim Episode 9 also ended with a hopeful demeanour, giving one hope that this dark and drab ending wouldn’t be the last time we’ll see this show shine.
Verdict
Trapped In A Dating Sim Episode 9 was a somewhat complicated and uneventful episode of the show that focused more on the characters than what was happening around them. Overall, not a bad effort, but we’ve seen better.
