Tonight You’re Sleeping with Me Review: Shallow and Poorly-Sketched Story

Tonight You’re Sleeping with Me (Dzisiaj śpisz ze mną) is a brand-new Polish movie that premiered on March 1, 2023, on Netflix. Directed by Robert Wichrowski, the story revolves around a woman stuck in a loveless marriage until her life flips upside down with the arrival of her past lover. The film is based on the novel authored by Anna Szczypczynska.

Starring Roma Gasiorowska as Nina in the lead role alongside Wojciech Zielinski, Maciej Musiał, Jacek Koman, Malgorzata Mikolajczak, Ewa Wencel, Karolina Porcari and more. Anna Janyska writes the script, and the movie has a runtime of approximately 92 minutes.

A frustrated woman, a distant husband and a long-lost love, the story unfolds exactly the way one would expect it to. There is no unpredictability or room for a different approach in the script. The movie starts slowly, and eventually, the protagonists engage in infidelity, similar to countless other movies or TV shows already in the industry.

Besides the illicit affair outside of marriage, the obvious age gap between the protagonists also raises the alarm. The young and handsome intern was a teenage boy when he first met Nina and developed a relationship. At the same time, Nina was quite possibly an adult. It becomes a tad bit uncomfortable after the revelation to witness the love story.

However, the story also attempts to display moralistic values while glorifying adultery, a common aspect of these storylines. The creators use the same formula to develop the plot, and every element of the movie is foreseeable. Only people living under a rock devoid of sunshine and air would find anything new in the story.

Another major drawback is the lack of a backstory for each character, making it impossible for the audience to understand or empathize with the protagonist. Certain plot points expect us to acknowledge the situation of the lonely wife with an unbearable mother, but they seem pointless reasons to seek comfort from someone else.

Nevertheless, there are plausible factors in the movie which make some parts of it believable. The situations are not as outlandish or ridiculous for the audience to dismiss instantly. But the reasons seem out of proportion for someone to go out of their way to destroy a relationship they have been in for a long time.

The title does live up to its expectations. The second half of the movie is filled with explicit sexual content, but they are not as unbearable and dreadful as some other movies (Yes, I am talking about 365 Days). It is basically about a woman’s innate desires that take control of her life and push her to make the wrong decisions.

Roma Gasiorowska did a good job of portraying a frustrated woman looking for an escape from her mundane life. Maciej Musiał also delivered an adequate performance. Wojciech Zielinski did as the script demanded with the limited screen time. The other supporting actors also did as required.

Tonight You’re Sleeping with Me Review: Final Thoughts

With a predictable story and an overdone plotline, the movie is as mediocre as it comes. The script has little to no variety; it will be like watching the same old movie in a different language. I highly recommend this movie if you are searching for something that does not require much attention.
