The 1st episode of Tomo-chan Is a Girl or Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko! (トモちゃんは女の子！) is here, and this episode was just hilarious with its different character’s quirky antics and the random situations they fall into. Now without further ado, let us jump into this review.
Tomo-chan Is a Girl Episode 1 Overview
This series is that much-awaited anime adaptation of our beloved romcom manga of the same name. Fans of this franchise are beyond ecstatic that this perfection of a romcom is finally getting the proper treatment it needed, and we are excited to see how it goes.
The anime is directed by Nanba Hitoshi, who has worked on Anime like Fullmetal Alchemist, Hajime no Ippo, Gosick, etc. The sound director is Masanori Tsuchiya, who has given music to shows like Plastic Memories, Kenja no Mago, Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii, etc.
The opening song will be Kurae! Telepathy (くらえ! テレパシー)” performed by Maharajan. The ending theme is “yurukuru＊love” performed by voice actors Rie Takahashi, Rina Hidaka, Sally Amaki.

Tomo-chan Is a Girl Episode 1 Review and Recap – The Natural Lady-Killer
Just as predicted, this episode was funny as hell. The opening scene showcases our female protagonist delivering a heartfelt confession towards her beloved Jun. For a moment, you think that her feelings must have gone through, and they will definitely be a couple now. But Jun, our male lead, does one of the worst things that you can do to someone who confesses their love to you – he friendzones her.
Tomo, who is accustomed to such treatment, is sad but at the same time accepts her fate and screams in her heart, proclaiming she is a girl! That scream alone will tell you about the anguish she feels for being treated as a guy by the man of her dreams.
We get more info on the backstory of these two characters. Tomo and Jun have always been inseparable friends. For a time, they did not go to the same school, and when they reunited in their middle school, Jun asked her why she was wearing a skirt. From then on, Tomo realised that he never saw her as a woman before.
Thankfully, Tomo has another friend to whom she can express her womanly grief even though she is not the best person to give out advice. Gundou is a bit different from other girls. She is Tomo’s only female friend, and surprisingly, she and Jun cannot stand each other.
Apart from our main characters, Gundou is the only person that stands out in this episode. She gives off a formidable and dark aura that tells others not to mess with her. If Tomo can break you physically, Gundou can break you mentally and emotionally.
Some other characters also got introduced, like Tatsumi, who was sure that Tomo and Jun were dating. He provides good comic relief when he shares the screen with Gundou, as he is the exact opposite of her serious and mysterious self.
Verdict
So far, I must say that they have done a satisfactory job of adapting the much-loved manga into a series. The comic punches land well, and the voice actors do great in portraying their characters truthfully. Here I should mention Takahashi Rie, the voice actress of Tomo, who captured her character’s essence perfectly.
All in all, it was really fun to watch, and I have high hopes for the next episodes. The animation is not that great, but it is nothing unwatchable. Watch this anime on Crunchyroll.
