To My Beloved Thief Episode 16 Recap

As a finale, Episode 16 moves forward showing that danger is real and the characters’ emotions are going to be intimate, gentle and reflective. Overall a combination of pain and happiness.

After learning about Eun-jo’s true identity, Sa-hyeong takes her hostage at the courtesans’ house (dang) as he wants to claim what he’s lost. Regardless our lady remains all strong as she has already set forward a plan to tranquilise him. That is, she throws a cosmetic powder into the nearby fire pit and paralyses him as the toxic gas emitted from it does the magic. Desperately, Sa-hyeong tries his best to escape but our King Yi Yeol enters, saves Eun-jo who is also slipping away. Sa-hyeong is arrested while Eun-jo is rushed for medication. Sadly before all this chaos, she also learns that it is Sa-hyeong who killed her father and not the King. Double the pain up!

Days pass before she finally opens her eyes. She’s alive but extremely weak. Amidst this, we see flashbacks revealing how Yi Yeol had found Eun-jo’s lantern and secretly read her wish. She had written that in her next life, she hoped to live as Yi Yeol’s wife. So cute!

After some days, Sa-hyeong meets his fateful end. After reading Eun-jo’s letter, his ego crumbles. Unable to bear humiliation and defeat, he chooses to drown himself. Jae-i mourns in silence for his father and that’s when Yi Yeol visits him. A shocking revelation takes place as Jae-i confesses that he too is the son of a courtesan, a truth he concealed for years. He admits that he once hated Eun-jo for rebelling despite sharing the same low birth.

Yet her courage inspired him. It was because of her that he began to question the system and even fell for her. In the end, he wishes Yi Yeol happiness and leaves the country behind, choosing a new journey.

Another satisfying story plot unfolds with Hae-rim. The so called foolish brother of Eun-jo is actually one of Gil Dong’s supporters and a big scholar who purposely acts ignorant to ensure his step mother and step sister are safe. This is such a nice character sketch reveal.

With order slowly coming back to form, Yi Yeol makes a new decision. He passes the throne to Ban, the rightful heir and son of his elder brother. The former King continues treatment for his madness, while his wife, whom he once betrayed, coldly reminds him that regret will be his lifelong friend. Aha Karma!

Yi Yeol is finally free from all the responsibilities that come with being a king. He meets Eun-jo. It is, like any other man meeting a woman. They make a promise to each other that they will wait for the day when they can get married without having to think about their titles or the politics that come with them.

They go on an outing together and they find out something else that connects them. A time ago when Yi Yeol was a little kid he almost drowned in the water. It was Eun-jo who saved his life. What is really surprising is that neither Yi Yeol nor Eun-jo knew about this until now.

The mystery gets deeper with the mans reappearance. He was seen before at the market. It turns out he is a god of destiny. A time ago young Yi Yeol made a wish. He prayed to meet the girl who saved him so he could protect her. His wish came true.

In the end Ban becomes king. Yi Yeol and Eun-jo finally hug each other. They are not king and doctor. Not. Ruler. They are two people who found each other because of fate.

The ending is really sweet! It feels like it is supposed to be that way. The last episode does not have fights instead it is about what is meant to be getting better and people telling the truth about how they feel. Eun-jo is very smart. She shows this again even when she is in a bad situation and Yi Yeol is really worried about her and wants to save her which is very romantic and touching.

The story of To My Beloved Thief and the love between Eun-jo and Yi Yeol is the best when it is quiet like when we find out about what happened when they were kids and how Yi Yeol wanted to meet the girl who helped him. It feels like it was always supposed to be this way like things are falling into place for Eun-jo and Yi Yeol.
