Thicker Than Water Review: Gutsy, Unpredictable and Slick Thriller

Thicker Than Water (Jusqu’ici tout va bien) is a French crime thriller show created by Nawell Madani and Simon Jablonka which revolves around a journalist trying to safeguard her brother from notable drug lords. Moreover, the series is divided into eight episodes with an average runtime of 30-35 minutes each.

The synopsis of the series reads as

Fara Bentayeb, a hardworking journalist lands herself in deep trouble after her brother, Selim, ends up involving her in a shady deal.

-Thicker Than Water Review Does Not Contain Spoilers-

This crime thriller series starts with the introduction of Fara Bentayeb, a local Arab freelance journalist aiming to become a TV News presenter in a large French media conglomerate, by working her way from ground zero. At first, we are made familiar with her hustling lifestyle and her extended family, including her multiple sisters and single brother, Selim.

Later on, the aspiring journalist faces prejudice at work and almost quits her job after the conglomerate assigns a lesser experienced candidate for the role of a news presenter. Moreover, with this detailed context, we move onto the ruckus created by Selim, when he unexpectedly parks his vehicle inside Fara’s garage space.

Even though Fara secures her dream job (with a little bit of luck and social media outrage), the Selim favour eventually translates into a domino effect that leads Fara and her sisters into the vicinity of dangerous criminals and drug lords. What happens next, is a gutsy tale of love, sacrifice and betrayal.

Nawell Madani, who also serves as the creator and writer of the series, successfully puts together a thrilling set of events while managing different sub-themes in the story. There is a definitive main plot which revolves around Fara’s pitch-perfect strategy to safeguard her brother and the entire family, alongside some heavy commentary on discrimination, prejudice and conservative approaches in general.

Furthermore, the first couple of episodes literally demands your attention, as they catch up with the storyline pretty slowly. However, once the element of intrigue sets in, it’s a pretty smooth binge-watch from thereon. Moreover, Nawell Madani’s engaging performance helps to breathe life into the character arc of Fara.

The last-minute escape from the cops and the drug kin pins makes up for some solid cliffhangers in several episodes. While the teamwork arc of the sisters evolves into a greater theme in the story. Overall, almost all the elements come together to paint a gritty suspense story, without diluting much in the progress.

Thicker Than Water Final Thoughts

The series will keep you hooked right from the first monologue, and then keep on transitioning into a much-improved version of the previous episode. The slick writing allows the story to course correct itself and also prevents a ton of cliche overruns. All in all, there is enough suspense to curtail the monotony in the series, and there are hardly any filler episodes to spoil your binge marathon.
