The WONDERfools Ending Explained

Why Did the Characters Gain Powers?

At first, when Chae-ni, Ro-bin and Kyung-hoon gain their surprising powers, they are confused and at a loss for words. Unable to control these huge responsibilities, it ends up being a messy situation for which no one has any answers. However, towards the end, they finally understand the true reason for their powers – the night they all fell into the city’s dump zone, they came in contact with a defunct lab’s toxic runoff that ultimately poisoned them and gave them their abilities.

Their abilities reflect who they are, bringing out their true self and highlighting the fact that they are not random. For example, Chae-ni’s teleportation abilities reflect her desperation to see the world, Ro-bin’s super strength highlights his bottled-up frustration, and Gyeong-hun’s immobilising ability highlights how stuck he feels in life. These powers aren’t just random gifts, but an emotional extension of the characters themselves.

What was Won-do’s Real Plan?

While Won-do initially starts as a rational person with everyone’s best interests at heart, we eventually learn that he’s the ultimate villain who has been controlling and manipulating people for decades. He was the one who had been fuelling the chaos in Haeseong City and using it as an opportunity to manipulate the innocent townspeople.

His real plan was to get his hands on the Child with the Eternal Heart, a “weapon” he had created long ago, someone who could come back from the dead. 20 years ago, the child was left brain-dead thanks to the blast in Won-do’s lab. Now, the evil scientist wants to use this child for his own twisted use and, in a cruel turn of events, the heart now resides inside Chae-ni. That’s why Chae-ni had heart troubles initially, and the toxic runoff had helped it to function as a true Eternal Heart once again.

Won-do is painfully aware that he cannot make the Eternal Heart again, and thus, he is desperate to get the one inside Chae-ni. When that starts to seem difficult, especially with the other Wonderkinders’ health deteriorating fast, he decides to spray the toxic chemical all over Haeseong City and find the one person who might have another Eternal Heart.

Do Chae-ni and the Group Stop Him?

Chae-ni and the others decide to take care of the responsibility that has been given to them and protect Haeseong City at all costs. Mixing comedy and emotions, the group try their best to use their powers against the Wonderkinders. It’s chaotic, but it’s through this chaos that they find a way to survive against their nemesis. The lab explodes once again, but leaves Un-jeong gravely injured but alive.

The last thing that the gang has to do is stop the firework display that will spill toxic chemicals all over the city. For this, Chae-ni uses her teleportation abilities to take the blimp far away before it bursts, saving the city but leaving her fate unknown.

Do Chae-ni and Un-jeong End Up Together?

After some time passes and everything goes back to normal in Haeseong City, Chae-ni returns home one day, much to the delight of her friends and family. She explains that although she took the blimp far away, she couldn’t find a way to teleport back and had to walk home! It’s a hilarious turn of events, but one that is met with only happiness from everyone. In the aftermath, Chae-ni and Un-jeong express their feelings for one another, although how their relationship turns out is left ambiguous.

What Does the Ending Mean?

The ending showcases Won-do still alive. During the events in the lab, Ju-ran had injected Won-do with Chae-ni’s blood, and although it was initially thought that nothing came of it, it seems like Won-do did obtain immortality of some sort because of it. The ending is left ambiguous, but it’s clear that Won-do is not going away so easily and that there’s more to the story that will unfold in possible later seasons.

The season, ultimately, highlights how anxiety and uncertainty of the unknown can make people vulnerable. The fear of such a big change can make anyone easily manipulated and can bring out the deeply personal insecurities in people. Ultimately, the group overcoming these fears and embracing their powers highlight that courage isn’t about being fearless; it’s about continuing to move forward when things feel unpredictable.

Is The WONDERfools Season 2 on the Horizon?

The WONDERfools ends ambiguously, with some questions left unanswered. Although another season hasn’t been announced yet, the ending leaves room for continuation. With Won-do still alive and possibly still looking for the Eternal Heart, another season might focus on his journey and how and if he can be defeated once and for all. However, let’s not forget that this is a Limited Series, so chances are a bit small.
