Over a month ago, The Super Mario Bros Movie teaser surfaced and left audiences feeling conflicted about the upcoming animated movie inspired by Nintendo’s classic video game that ruled over most of our childhoods. Its characters are intrinsically intertwined with nostalgic memories of the past, hence the stakes are high.
Universal Pictures turned up with a new trailer for the film a few hours ago, seeking to redeem the image of the forthcoming release. A stunning cast panel features Chris Pratt voicing the titular character (who’s finally being accepted as the character to some extent), Anya Taylor-Joy voicing Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and more. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic bring their directors’ vision to the table with Matthew Fogel coming up with the screenplay.

The latest trailer is overflowing with radiant blasts to the past with ample game references dominantly displayed throughout the video. Black’s Bowser, the quintessential arch-nemesis, is to face off against Pratt’s red hat adorning plumber. On the other hand, a fresh take on Princess Peach, pulled off by Taylor-Joy, envisions her as the leader of the movement, bent on saving the various galaxies out there from fatal threats like the ones initiated by the prime antagonist.

And the fans have spoken yet again, but this time in favour of the visuals, and even the voice casting. Several comments surged high with their expectations reaching the roof as they acknowledged the incorporation of the original gameplay. Distributed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, and produced by illumination, this sure isn’t the first Mario movie adaptation that has made its way to the screens, but after the severe disappointments that gaming fans have had to face over the years, this one surely puts on a brave face and we can’t wait to see it.
Other renowned characters from the game series and their banter with each other foreshadow a good day spent at the theatres in the coming future. Bowser interrogating Luigi about his brother by threatening his symbol of pride and recognition – the moustache – is everything. The rainbow road at the end of the trailer, with Mario racing into the distance is yet another visual we can’t have enough of.
