The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 7 Recap

The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 8
The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 8: Still

The episode opens with Yoshiki still shaken and dispirited after Hikaru’s actions in the previous installment. He’s fully aware of the danger Hikaru poses, yet feels powerless to change anything. When Hikaru nervously asks if Yoshiki is angry with him, he responds with a cryptic calm, choosing silence over confrontation. Eventually, the two decide to skip school together. During their time out, Hikaru remains uneasy, worried about Yoshiki’s true feelings, while Yoshiki insists, though unconvincingly, that he isn’t upset.

Their outing leads them to the movies, where they watch a film Hikaru had been eager to see. Meanwhile, back at school, his classmates put on a performance for a special event. What stands out most here is the way the episode weaves these moments together, juxtaposing the stage performance with Yoshiki and Hikaru’s day, in a sequence that feels hauntingly beautiful.

As the story progresses, Yoshiki’s strange behavior begins to make sense. He leaves behind an unsettling message for his family, foreshadowing something grim. In a shocking twist, Yoshiki lures Hikaru to his room and commits an act that’s almost impossible to process. He stabs Hikaru with the intention of killing him.

Today’s episode begins with Hikaru and Yoshiki being back to normal, even though a few moments back, Yoshiki tried to kill Hikaru. They have a conversation and joke around, but mainly focus on the fact that they must understand what the creature inside Hikaru actually is. They decide to utilise the note that Yoshiki found in the original Hikaru’s room and ask his grandfather about it. From him, we learned very minute things like the village being the village of murderers, but beyond that, nothing was clearly mentioned.

Later in school, Yoshiki finds out that Asako has lost most of her hearing ability in one year. Needless to say, he feels responsible for this and berates Hikaru for his doing. However, this episode was truly filled with information about the mysterious nature of the village and its complicated history.

A past map reveals that the village that the protagonists live in might have been a part of a bigger village that was shaped like a human body. This was certainly creepy, but we also get to know that Nonuki-sama, whom we hear about all the time, was supposed to be a benevolent God who turned into a wrathful God. However, nothing could have prepared me for the absolute nightmare fuel of a scene, where Yoshiki suddenly sees a figure while he is in his class. This segment was really terrifying.

The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 8: Still

This episode was again really good because it took the mystery up a notch. Yoshiki is finally within the radar of the mysterious man who is investigating Hikaru, and we might see a proper showdown between them soon. I also like the fact that Yoshiki is slowly losing his human morals because of his attachment to the monster Hikaru. But the last part of the episode was truly haunting, and it reveals how both Hikaru and Yoshiki might be in bigger trouble than they think.
