“The Silence of the Lambs” gave Hollywood one of its most iconic villains in Hannibal Lecter, brought to life in an unforgettable performance by Anthony Hopkins. Thirty-five years after its release, the film is returning to theaters to introduce itself to a whole new generation, courtesy of Fathom Entertainment. The 1991 psychological thriller, remastered in 4K, screened April 26 and is set to screen again April 29 as part of the company’s Big Screen Classics series.
The film is based on Thomas Harris’ 1988 novel of the same name. As is the case with most adaptations, Harris’ work was significantly altered for the big screen. While screenwriter Ted Tally made various adjustments throughout, his most consequential change was to the ending.
The film closes with Lecter calling Clarice to congratulate her on graduating from the FBI Academy, signing off with the line, “I’m having an old friend for dinner” — perhaps the most chilling pun ever put on screen — as he sets his sights on his nemesis, Dr. Chilton. In the novel, Lecter says goodbye in a letter that Deadline reports, deemed insufficiently cinematic by Tally. Adapting it as narration or in any other form would have drained the ending of its dread, which is why it was reconceived as a phone call.
That phone call ending was itself not Tally’s first attempt. The version that made it to screens was a revision prompted by director Jonathan Demme, who balked at how far the original draft went. While it might not raise many eyebrows in today’s horror landscape, it would have been a bridge too far for audiences in the early 1990s.
In that original ending, Tally wrote that Lecter had already captured Chilton, who is shown tied up. Regarding the change, Tally recalled Demme telling him, “He’s still a human being. We have to give him at least a slight chance [of] getting away.”
The American Film Institute named Hopkins’ portrayal of Hannibal Lecter the No. 1 film villain of all time.
Though Lecter is the most memorable element of the film for many viewers, Tally believes it is the heroine, Clarice — played by Jodie Foster — who made the film the landmark it became. “It’s her combination of strength and vulnerability,” he has said. “She’s a small woman, by herself in a rough, man’s world. Her courage is so moving to me.”
“The Silence of the Lambs” is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, AMC+ and other platforms.
