The Perfect Lie Episode 1 Review

What Starts as a Charming Love Story Turns Into an Unexpected Thriller
The episode begins as anything but a thriller. From the way it started, one would mistake it for an exceptionally well-written and brilliantly shot romantic drama where the characters would fall in love after they meet for the first time. We see two characters who live very different lives. One is a brilliant surgeon who is also a doting father, and another is a single school teacher.
The episode essentially showcases how their lives intertwine in an unexpected manner, and things spiral from then on. I never really expected the story would take such a turn towards the end, and I am pleasantly surprised by how intriguing it became later.
An Eligible Bachelor and a Unique Teacher Find Themselves Drawn to Each Other

Jun-ho seems like the best bachelor in town who just lost his wife and has a son to take care of. He is also a well-known doctor and quite a catch for many ladies. On the other hand, Ji-seon is a new teacher at school where she tries her best to keep the kids’ learning experience as holistic as possible. She doesn’t want her children to suffer and approaches teaching them uniquely.
The two meet purely because of Jun-ho’s son, who happens to study at Ji-seon’s school. Their meeting began on an awkward foot, but that did not affect their beginning in a negative way. Rather, the uniqueness of their initial introduction only intensified the pull between the two. As the story progressed, it seemed like everything would go well and these two would definitely make a beautiful pair.
Beautiful Visuals and Challenging Roles Make This First Episode Stand Out

The most surprising aspect of this twist is the casting itself. Both actors take on incredibly challenging roles, yet they manage to bring their characters to life with remarkable ease. At least in the first episode, their performances were highly impressive.
The cinematography of this series feels really pretty in the beginning. It has muted colours, and the dark palette gives off a cosy vibe. However, when the narrative shifts, that same muted palette acts as a mysterious landscape where anything can go wrong.
A Web of Conflicting Stories Makes This Mystery Impossible to Figure Out

Right off the bat, the mystery was very well written and well designed. Towards the end, you do not know whom to trust and who is actually telling the truth. We get two conflicting narratives where people blame each other for what has happened to them. The case gets so confusing that you end up asking yourself what actually happened.
Final Thoughts
I absolutely loved every single moment of this episode. When it first began, the romance was really good, and even though it felt like the pacing was slow, I actually think it helped develop the characters for the big reveal. The series is based on a British drama called Liar. It would be interesting to see if they change the ending or keep it the same.
Other than that, I’m really interested to see how these actors would do in such a complex storyline.
