The People We Hate at the Wedding Review: Family Issues, a Wedding and a Lot of Wine

Prime Videos is here with The People We Hate at the Wedding and this is simply a tale of a dysfunctional family, a wedding and glasses of wine that just keep coming. Directed by Clair Scanlon, the film is based on a book by Grant Ginder while the screenplay has been written by Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy Molyneux.

The film’s cast includes Allison Janney, Kristen Bell, Ben Platt, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Dustin Milligan, Isaach De Bankolé, Karan Soni, and Tony Goldwyn, alongside other actors. With producers Ashley Fox and Margot Hand, the music for the film has been given by Tome Hove and Oliver Stapleton is the cinematographer.

The synopsis of the film reads:

Struggling American siblings Alice and Paul reluctantly agree to attend the wedding of their estranged, wealthy half-sister, Eloise, in the English countryside alongside their mother, Donna.

-The People We Hate at the Wedding Review contains No spoilers-

The People We Hate at the Wedding brings a dramatic plot with drunken jokes and awkward moments that would happen, but not all at the same time. While the film is amusing in certain aspects and a light, fun watch for many, there are moments when you just want to skip and be done with the film.

The People We Hate at the Wedding Review
The People We Hate at the Wedding still

When watching this film almost anyone can see that it is crowded with characters, bringing in anything and everything that can be fit into the few days leading to the wedding have been brought and thrown into forming a big mess. And the rivalry between Americans and the British does not miss out on making its appearance here as well.

While there were quite some scenes that could easily make you laugh, the shifts in between and the repeated flirting, sex, and wine just create a mumble-jumble that brings in some annoyance to the viewers.

However, the familial love that the film has tried to bring out does make it better and I have enjoyed that aspect which is unfortunately not shown much. The dysfunctional vibe had to be given so there was quite a cut down on the sweet lovely scenes.

Lastly, the comedy is highly focused on Kristen Bell’s character and her troubles when it could have done so much better if they thought about the other characters instead. Turning it from a comedy to a rom-com was not the best idea and that is something that is clearly noticeable when you don’t get much insight into the other members other than the pictures rolling with the ending credits.

Summing Up: The People We Hate at the Wedding

If you looking for something to go along while you are doing nothing then sure, you can check this out; but there are better movies and shows out there which deserve your attention more. You might as well just play this film in the back, but will all the awkward scenes it might not be the best idea.

Altogether, there are a lot of people hating everything in life instead of trying to fix it until the very end when it is the other side making a move. So while it is a fun little watch, I wouldn’t go for it a second time.
