Plot Summary

The Morning Show Season 3 Episode 1 is set in March 2022, and it starts with showing an obituary of Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston). Well, she’s not dead. But soon, she will travel to space with a billionaire, Paul Marks, in Hyperion One Rocket. Everyone is excited as she will be the first female journalist in the US to travel to space.

On the other hand, Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) is hosting the Evening News Show for the UBA and wants to cover a story on the effects of the anti-abortion bill. However, she’s asked to drop the story. Her personal life hasn’t been going well either. As both these ladies have something to do, Cory (Billy Crudup) plays his own game to save the UBA. He’s the reason why Alex has to travel to space, who, in return, hopes she gets the partnership in the network. But Cory’s motive is something else.

Discussion

After a messy and pointless Season 2, I didn’t have much hope for The Morning Show Season 3. I am glad it didn’t expect much from the makers because the first episode truly doesn’t offer anything interesting or powerful like Season 1 did from the start itself. The space mission in the last 15 minutes is laughable. It made me think, out of all the options, that could’ve made sense in the world. Why did Cory choose the space mission to save the UBA?

The makers touched upon the topic of the effects of anti-abortion bills in several places in the US. Bradley wants to cover the story of a woman in Texas who crosses the border every month to get abortion pills for women who cannot drive out. One would expect the topic to be covered sincerely, talking about the severe effects of such a law. However, the work politics and space absurdity dominate the narrative. The abortion issue seems to be mentioned just to have something of relevance.

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are brilliant actresses, and despite the weirdness going around in the show’s premise, the actresses play their parts phenomenally. However, it seems like Alex and Bradley are just stuck in a loop of not getting anything they want while being called important assets of the channel. Billy Crudup, as Cory, is still a man of questionable intention. But we want him to either go full bad or get better. It’s getting repetitive. Jon Hamm is the new cast addition and has played his part well so far. We can’t wait to see if he makes everything better or worse at the UBA.

The Morning Show Season 3 Episode 1 Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, the first episode fails to keep you intrigued with the new storyline. One wonders how they will deal with the entire space travel narrative, especially after everything that happened in the last 5 minutes. We can only hope the show picks up better and serves a solid storyline, which we didn’t get in the previous season.

The first episode is now streaming on Apple TV+.
