The Makanai Cooking for the Maiko House Teaser: The Daily Deeds of the Kyoto Cook

Netflix has dropped the teaser for its heartfelt Japanese series The Makanai Cooking for the Maiko House. It was written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda. The first season of the show will have 9 episodes in total.

The Makanai Cooking for the Maiko House is the adaptation of an original superhit Manga Maiko-san Chi No Makanai-san Maiko-san by Aiko Koyoma, which has sold more than 2.7 million copies worldwide. The show is set in Kyoto and follows the lives of childhood best friends, Sumire Harai, played by Natsuki Deguchi and Kiyo Nozuki, played by Nana Mori.

Sumire and Kiyo come to Kyoto to become apprentice geisha, but only Sumire can become one. Kiyo now cooks meals for the workers of the Maiko House. The Japanese series will showcase the lives of the cooks as apprentice geisha and Makanai. It is evident that viewers will also enjoy visuals of some delicious Japanese cuisine. The drama will entail their everyday lives and the friendship of the two foil characters.

The teaser begins with Kyoto penning down an emotional letter to her Grandma, describing her new life as a cook at the Maiko House. She seems content with her job, and everyone in the Maiko House seems to enjoy her cooking. Amidst the daily household chores of the Maiko House, it will be interesting to watch the drama that surrounds the Makanai.

Given the popularity of Manga amidst readers, there has been a rise in their movie and series adaptation. Netflix describes The Makanai Cooking for the Maiko House as a heartfelt, intimate drama. Given the multiple award-winning Manga that is the inspiration behind this series, we are excited for the premiere of the show.

The series is planned by Genki Kawamura and is a joint production between Netflix, Story Inc. and the Bun-Buku Company.

The Makanai Cooking for the Maiko House will stream on Netflix from January 2023.
