The Gardener Ending Explained
The series starts with Elmer and his controlling mother, China Jurado, getting the task of killing a young teacher named Violeta. According to Sabela, Violeta is responsible for murdering her son, whom she was dating, and she thus wants revenge. Elmer and China have helped many people get revenge in a similar fashion — his extensive knowledge of plants and their expansive backyard make for the perfect combination to kill people and hide the bodies.
However, when Elmer, during the course of research, looks into Violeta’s life and then bumps into her one day, he falls head over heels for her. Previously unable to feel anything due to a childhood accident that caused damage to his brain, this is the first time Elmer has left strong feelings of any kind, and he immediately becomes infatuated with Violeta. Eventually, he feels other emotions as well, like anger and sadness, and grows a little obsessed over her.

Due to this, he starts to grow distant from his mother and refuses to kill the woman he cares about. China grows concerned that her killing machine is slowly growing out of her thumb and tries whatever is necessary to stop him from coming to terms with their co-dependent relationship. She tries to manipulate him and trash-talks Violeta, and then drugs him against his consent in order to stop him from thinking for himself. However, Elmer sees through his mother’s deception and opposes her schemes.
In the midst of this, he continues to murder people. He gets rid of one guy who talks down to Violeta for her boyfriend’s death, and the rising disappearances make two detectives take notice. They figure out that there’s this has something to do with Elmer and China, but are unable to find the necessary proof to make things stick. As Sabena’s pressure grows on China to get rid of Violeta, the former abducts Violeta’s dog. Although she gets Milky back eventually, the pressure causes her to lash out at Elmer, and the two have a bad fight.

Although they make up eventually, Elmer decides to murder Sabena to stop the madness once and for all. Unfortunately, he doesn’t take his mother’s antics into consideration, and she hires another guy to attack Violeta. She turns out to be more fierce than he anticipated, and in a fight between the two, she kills her attacker. Elmer arrives to help her get rid of the body, and the two talk about the murders that he has committed. Surprisingly, Violeta seems to be at ease with Elmer’s past, and after staging the murder as an accident, Elmer goes off to talk to his mother.
While this is going on, the detectives get a warrant to search China’s property but realise that she has removed all evidence. With nothing to go on, they get admonished by their superior, while Elmer and China have a heated argument, after which he collapses. It turns out that the tumour that he refused to do anything about caused a blackout, and it results in him being rushed to surgery. Elsewhere, overwhelmed with everything that is happening, Violeta skips town.

After Elmer comes to after the surgery, he is annoyed with his mother for forcing him to have the surgery, but she refuses to let him go. He chooses to work at the gardening facility once more, but it’s clear that their relationship has turned sour. In a surprising turn of events, he finds himself face to face with Violeta, who tells him that she wants to hire him to get rid of someone. He is more than happy to oblige.
