The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 1 Recap

The story sets up an intriguing contrast between two neighbouring schools, each with its own unique identity. On one side, there’s an elite all-girls academy known for its refined students, either exceptionally talented or from influential backgrounds. Right next to it stands a boys’ public school, infamous for attracting unruly and less academically inclined students.
Given how starkly different the two schools are, the girls from the private academy look down on the boys and do not hesitate to show their disdain whenever they cross paths. But then there’s Rintaro, who does not quite fit the mould. Despite his intimidating appearance, he’s a gentle soul often misunderstood by those around him. Every time someone gets scared of him, he takes it to heart, blaming himself for being a bother.

Things begin to shift when he meets Waguri, a regular at his family’s pastry shop. Their first meeting is laced with a slight mix-up, but it quickly becomes clear that Waguri isn’t fazed by Rintaro’s looks. In fact, she enjoys spending time with him and often finds herself flustered in his presence. Rintaro, used to rejection and wary of being accepted, is caught off guard by Waguri’s warmth.
The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Episode 2 Review

Today’s episode starts with Rintaro being quite shocked by the discovery that Waguri studies in Kikyo, the school opposite his, Chidori. This is because he knows the people of that school hate the guys from his school, and thus, he believes that Waguri will try to avoid him from now on. His friends also join him, and they too showcase their distaste towards the Kikyo school for apparent reasons.

However, things become complicated when Rintaro finds Waguri waiting for him at the gates of Chidori High School. This becomes a sensation as no one from the Kikyo school has ever waited in front of Chidori like this. Here, the situation worsens when two girls from Kikyo treat one of Rintaro’s friends badly for no reason. This kind of situation reminded me of the classic Romeo and Juliet, where two people from rival families fall in love, but here it’s just rival schools.

Thankfully, this misunderstanding gets cleared when Waguri goes to Rintaro’s desert shop and has a deep conversation with him. At this point, Waguri makes it clear that she genuinely wants to get to know Rintaro better. This is obviously something Rintaro has never experienced before. Hence, it is completely understandable that he feels overwhelmed and struggles to grasp her intentions. However, it is also evident that when he assumes Waguri has nothing to gain by getting close to him, he’s projecting his own insecurities onto her, rather than letting her decide for herself.
Verdict

The anime is going forward in a very known and predictable trajectory. It uses typical Shoujo formulas in the narrative to make the story warm and feel good, something I do not have any problems with. However, it is also true that it does not give us anything that we have not seen before.
But yes, this is a nice romance drama as a whole that you can definitely watch.
