The Essex Serpent Episode 6 Review: Surfacing

The Essex Serpent Episode 6, titled Surfacing, is now out on Apple TV+. Directed by Clio Barnard, Anna Symon has written the 50 minutes episode. The gothic romance period drama is based on Sarah Perry’s book of the same name. The show stars Tom Hiddleston as Vicar Will Ransome, Claire Danes as Cora Seaborne, Frank Dillane as Doctor Luke Garrett, Clémence Poésy as Stella Ransome, Hayley Squires as Martha, Jamael Westman as Dr George Spencer, Lily-Rose Aslandodgu as Naomi Banks.

The synopsis for the Apple TV+ series reads, “Set in Victorian England, the series follows London widow Cora Seaborne (Danes) who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. She forms an unlikely bond with the village vicar (Hiddleston), but when tragedy strikes, locals accuse her of attracting the creature.”

The Essex Serpent Episode 6 Recap/Review Contains Spoilers

The Essex Serpent Episode 6 starts with Cora and Luke in distress after everything that happened last night. Dr Luke gets attacked with severe damage to his right hand. Luke’s heartbroken as he realises that he cannot perform surgery again. Cora’s room is a mess after her fallout with Stella and Luke and the pain of not being with Will.

Through George Spencer, Cora learns about the attack on Luke. She offers him to stay at her place as friends. However, Luke is madly in love with Cora and refuses her offer. Cora also meets Stella to clear out things. However, there’s one person who she also wishes to talk to – Will. Thanks to Will’s wife Stella, Cora and Frankie get a chance to visit Aldwinter again.

In a letter, Will tells Cora that Stella wants to meet her and Frankie and they should come to Aldwinter. But he mentions in the letter that she shouldn’t come back. Cora still goes back as she’s concerned about Stella. Just like Will, Cora also appears guilty in front of Stella. The Essex Serpent Episode 6 is emotionally charged up after Cora meets Stella.

The Essex Serpent Episode 6 Still 1

In the last episode of The Essex Serpent, we finally meet the serpent. It’s a bewildering end but also makes sense considering the beliefs and life of people in the 19th century. The last episode also tells us the fate of the three lovers – Cora, Will and Luke. Even though the love triangle was complicated, the makers preferred to give a simplistic and endearing end to the show.

Tom Hiddleston, Claire Danes and Frank Dillane have carried the entire series on their shoulders. They made us invested in their characters’ stories, pain, love and heartbreak. The supporting cast also did a brilliant job, especially Hayley Squires.

The Essex Serpent Finale Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, at the end of the show, we learn the fate of the three lovers. The makers also answered the mystery behind the “flying serpent”. However, it would’ve been better if the show had more depth and horror elements. Relationships and emotions have always been the best part of the series. But considering it’s being presented as a gothic drama, the eerieness wasn’t enough.
