The rural farmland aesthetic really suits the show. As is mentioned in almost every review of this series, the slice-of-life elements stand out in this otherwise somewhat lacklustre series. The farmland area, particularly the one that is in the show right now, provides ample opportunity for various homely shenanigans that are very calming and entertaining to watch, which can only be a plus. After all, who doesn’t want to watch the devil incarnate uprooting weed from a greenhouse?

Well, to be fair to the show, this episode was far from just being about helping Chiho’s family with their field. There was a whole bear in the last episode that threatened to disrupt the peace of the area. Can you believe it? A bear! How will half a dozen superpowered beings do against the mighty creature from the forest? Can they somehow come out on top of the ferocious beast? Surely they would have to sacrifice life and limb to save their young or risk something even more important?

Being facetious aside, the bear wasn’t as ridiculous a problem as it would seem at first. The real issue that it represented was the need to keep everyone’s real identities safe while still trying to deal with a threat that would require superhuman efforts to deal with. The show was quite ingenious in the way it utilised the intricacies and nuances of living in a small town and applied it very well to the current logic of the show. The environment works really well with a group of friends helping out a wholesome family with their farm and saving it from bears periodically.

However, it wasn’t just bears that needed to be taken care of in this episode. There was serious crime afoot in the village, something that our heroes couldn’t abide by and had to stop any way they could. That led to a delightful plan and execution sequence that saw them almost expose themselves to the whole world in order to save a farm from being robbed. There was some great comedy in this part of the episode, alongside a very realistic portrayal of what criminals are like in places like that. Them not being thwarted by flying heroes can be ignored as an anomaly.

This season has been extremely low-key and under the radar so far, and we are almost at its conclusion. It has failed to make as many waves as the original season did, and there are multiple factors for that. The sequel dropping almost a decade after the originals doesn’t help, especially since the entire genre of fantasy isekai transformed between the time it took for the new season to drop. The somewhat directionless story doesn’t help, and although the production isn’t bad, it doesn’t feel as with the times as the original did. Overall, it doesn’t appear to be the show’s time right now.
Verdict
The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 9 was a very comfortable catch, as well as a highly entertaining episode that featured some great moments and an unpredictable return.
