Season 2 of The Devil Is A Part-Timer has been a long time coming ever since the series was first released in 2013 and impressed a lot of viewers with its character development and storytelling. The series is adapted from a Light Novel written by Satoshi Wagahara and illustrated by 029. It is also known in original Japanese as Hataraku Maou-sama Season 2 (stylised as Hataraku Maou-sama!!)
Studio 3Hz is producing this season, the team behind Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online and Princess Principal. It is being directed by Daisuke Tsukushi, who has been part of the productions of shows like Higurashi and My Hero Academia. The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 8 Review- Bear Country
Put yourself in the shoes of Emi for just a minute. Imagine that the parents that you loved with all your heart turn out to be not your real family and that you have been destined for much greater things than staying in a tiny farming village. Regretfully, you cross that bridge and learn how to be the one thing you were made to be- a weapon against the Demon King. After all, he was the one who mercilessly destroyed your village and everyone who lived in it. You must enact your vengeance on this foul creature without breaking the boundaries of a hero.

Then, as fate would have it, you come face-to-face with the Devil himself in his human form. You want to do him in right then and there, but he says that he’ll come back to this confrontation once he is done flipping burgers. Not only that, he seems to be the most gentle and careful person in this world, who is perfectly content with what he has and holds no ambition to reach where he used to be. In other words, Maou literally transformed right in front of your eyes into someone who displayed no traits of the Demon as you saw him.
Thus, in episodes like this one, I afford her a lot more leniency as a character than I would most others. She has been stagnant for a while now, with little to no progress in her development and even going back on some of what we saw in the first season. Still, the way she is written means she has a lot to figure out before she comes to terms with how Maou really is, and this episode was a good start towards that. She had a mature conversation with Maou in this episode, which would have been unlike her character in the previous season.

This outing sees Maou and friends head out to the countryside following the completion of their last part-time job on the beach, and the show looks like more of a slice of life than ever. We talked in the review of the previous episode about this, but the show is at its best when it is able to display both of its sides and relate them, which it did well here. The story is getting a little similar each time that this happens, but it isn’t that big of criticism for a show that isn’t very plot-driven in the first place.
This show much prefers a character-driven approach to its development, which it got to display plenty in this episode. We got to see an even lovelier side of Chiho than we usually do, and seeing Lucifer suffer is one of the best things you can lay your eyes upon in this show. Chiho’s family are all lovely people, even though the show didn’t have enough time to give definition to all of them. The bear sub-plot is an off-kilter one as well, but it is one that can lead to several interesting places.
Verdict
The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 8 was a soothing episode that took us into the calm depths of Japan’s countryside and inside the home of a humble farmer. More slice of life is always better!
