The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 7 Review- The Return Of The King

Emilia Camio The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 7

What is happening in this show? It feels like it is bouncing around from subject to subject and plotline to plotline without much of a resolution to anything it starts, despite appearing to have plans to do so. Where did any of this come from? Who is the new landlady, why is she systematically destroying Maou’s demons while tasking the Demon Lord to look after her holiday restaurant, and where do her loyalties lie? We got some of these answers from the latest episode, but at the cost of letting a lot more go unanswered.

Any episode of this show has two aspects in it- the slice of life one where Maou, Ashia, and others try to thrive in this human world that is still alien to them, and the supernatural fantasy one that features the origins of Maou, Emilia, and where it all started in the first place. Opinions might vary on this, but this writer much prefers the slice-of-life elements over the fantasy ones, especially because they are what keep this show different from most of the others of its kind. That, and the attention it pays to all of its characters.

Thus, whenever the show goes full force into the fantasy elements, it is always a little challenging to enjoy it for what it is. The fantasy story is fine and unique at times, especially with the addition of Alas Ramus in this season, but it can’t touch a simple day’s work at knockoff McDonald’s with Maou and Chiho. This was an episode that comprised almost entirely the tale of Ente Isla and the forces trying to bring it down, which is fine but is also something that we have seen a lot of times in the show.

In that way, it was a fine episode that managed to move that plot forward by placing the blame on Olba again, who is a bit of a white whale by this point. Every time anything in the show goes wrong, you can probably just attribute it to Olba and be right 90% of the time. If we had seen the heroes get their hands on him properly for once (Lucifer doesn’t count), this would have been a better storyline, but depending upon what he does next, he isn’t that bad of a villain. Just an extremely random one with few connections to both Maou and Emi.

At the end of this episode, we were left with a blank slate, which is both a good and a bad thing. Good because the show has the potential to go into a decent series of events after this without much baggage, but bad because the current plot was resolved precariously with much room for improvement. It is always nice to see Maou go back to his roots to solve a problem and observe the respect he once commanded, but that magic wears down every time he goes into that form and isn’t very powerful. Maou is a sweetheart, but he sure doesn’t look like a king of demons.

Verdict

The Devil Is A Part-Timer Season 2 Episode 7 was a middle-of-the-road episode that featured some cool moments followed by baffling plot decisions. Let’s hope the show can turn it back around after the halfway point.
