The Conjuring: Last Rites Review
If you’re anything like me, then The Conjuring universe must have had a massive space in your life since 2013. I adored the first film, and thus this one is quite bittersweet to me. Unfortunately, more bitter than sweet. With Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson bidding us adieu, many emotions are bound to arise, but, perhaps not shockingly, I found this last entry to be absolutely awful.
The Conjuring: Last Rites starts and ends with the Warrens, particularly Judy, facing their biggest fears. It’s a good idea, but everything else about the film is terrible, mostly because it’s almost a repeat of the 2013 film, but with the characters now older. Every jumpscare in the film is almost the same as what we watched in the first film, maybe with some different variations here and there.

A dangerous demon is haunting a family of 8, and only the Warrens can do something about it. It’s a tale as old as time. There’s nothing remotely new about this film, and it makes you wonder the point of another entry if it’s just going to repeat what we already know. I am not complaining about the jump scares in this film because that’s what this franchise is mostly about. The way the 2013 film held on to the tension and gave us the scares after holding our breaths for minutes on end felt refreshing, in a way.
Unfortunately, repeating the same formula twenty times tends to make it lose its charm, especially when you can predict when the next jumpscare is about to come around. The film mostly worked thanks to Farmiga and Wilson’s charm, although I got tired of Judy’s storyline being dragged the way it did. Moreover, the plot is riddled with holes that will leave you with more questions than answers.

The ending pays tribute to the Warrens in the way that it usually does. It’s sweet, but just doesn’t do anything remotely interesting to make us sit up and take note. As a result, the sweetness tests your patience as the film gets more and more sluggish. The family drama is nice at first, but it makes you question the point of it all in a horror film about demon hunters. The film sticks to its template till its last breath, giving us a disappointing ending that might be fun with friends, but disappointing when you truly think back to it.
Final Thoughts

The Conjuring: Last Rites is an unnecessary addition that marks the end of our favourite, although quite awful, film franchise. I guess it’s a good guilty pleasure, but there’s hardly anything new to this film that will truly make you sit up and take notice.
