The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 3 Review- Back on Track

After a nothing episode, it was high time we got some juicy bits to chomp on. Worry not, as we got plenty of material here. First, let us establish where we were before this episode. Vanitas, Noe, and some more bounty hunters went out to find a monster who was rumoured to have their real name stolen and terrorised a village. They met Jeanne there, who has her own motives for that monster, a fight ensues because of a nobody misgendering a powerful church official, and Noe got kidnapped by another group of people.

That was episode one. Here’s what happened in Episode two- We learned that the people who kidnapped Noe belonged to the D’apchier family. That’s it. That’s all that happened. One line of dialogue. Seriously, what is this pacing? Yes, I know that we saw Jeanne and Vanitas connect and saw bits of Jeanne’s backstory, but most of it was either useless in the grand scheme of things, or we discussed it in the current episode again. If that didn’t happen in the manga, one wouldn’t have wasted a second calling it a useless filler episode. Oh well, it is how it is, and we are now at the next episode. Let’s talk about what happened here.

This one was all about Chloe, Jeanne’s friend and the person who kidnapped Noe, as we saw in episode 2. We got to see her aim, character, and what made her do the things she did. She has a very interesting personality that comes across as a mixture of a kid and a very old lady, probably the same personality anyone who has spent centuries as an 11-year-old would have. While this isn’t a particularly unique take on the character, it is a pretty nuanced one.

The show flipped the concept of true name corruption on its head in an unexpectedly great manner, creating a ton of conflict between Noe and Chloe, whose names sound a lot like each other if you think about it. The backstory was suitably emotional and was able to generate quite a bit of sympathy for Chloe. The major conflict of Vanitas is still a bit of a mess, but I’m sure we’ll learn more about it as the show goes on. Her character design and animation are also impeccable, so a good job by the animators on that.

As final thoughts, I would like to say that although the opening and ending themes of this season are good, they do not come close to the first season’s quality. They were both impeccable before they got changed, and while I understand that the show had to change them, I still have a right to compare them with each other. The overall soundtrack of the show is great, and it would have been even better with season 1’s opening and ending themes.
Verdict
The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 3 was a decent episode of the show, giving us a ton of backstory and context on the current arc. No need to skip this one, so go ahead and watch it.
