The Beginning After the End Episode 12: Still

The episode opens with Arthur boldly challenging Cynthia, the head of Xyrus Academy, to a duel in hopes of proving himself. Despite giving it his all and experimenting with various elemental attacks, he falls short of defeating her. Nonetheless, Cynthia is impressed and offers him a spot at the academy. Arthur, however, chooses to delay his enrollment, expressing his desire to explore life as an adventurer for a few more years before committing to formal education.

His decision doesn’t sit well with his mother, who is understandably upset, Arthur had only just returned home and now planned to leave again. Still, after he assures her that he will stay in touch and return often, she reluctantly gives her blessing. Arthur’s father then suggests assembling a group of trusted individuals to ensure his safety on the road. Jasmine steps up and agrees to accompany him.

In today’s episode, we see Arthur beginning his journey with Jasmine and reaching his destination, where he can get his rank tested. Here, Jasmine and Arthur get some special privileges where they can have Arthur’s assessment done without him registering his real name. Thus, Arthur introduces himself as Note and even wears a mask so that his real face remains hidden. This happened because Jasmine’s father is quite influential in the guild that is conducting the assessment.

The assessment is supposed to take place in an arena where everybody would showcase their powers to the examiner. Here, a very strange thing happens when a participant called Elijah gets ranked as a B-rank adventurer without even showcasing his powers. Apart from that, we also get to see a very cocky and overconfident mage called Lucas, who did not take the exam seriously and even tried to insult the examiner. He is of elven descent and showcases tremendous power. His fire magic was really destructive, but he was unable to control his own spells properly. Thus, when he tries to harm the teacher intentionally, Arthur comes in to put him in his place.

The time for Arthur to get his rank assessed finally comes, and needless to say, he gets the B rank right away without much issue. However, in this episode, we also get to learn a bit more about the lore of this world.  Apparently, there have been a lot more dwarf and elf mages who are extremely talented and are going to be key players in the future. In such a setup, Arthur was definitely very mysterious to the examiners as he was perhaps the most powerful amongst the newcomers.

In this episode, towards the end, we also get to know a lot more about Jasmine and how she struggled in her life. Yes, this was a much better episode than the previous ones. It gave us the important aspects of the world and also showcased some decent action. But again, it was not something that was very good.
