In this episode, the long-anticipated festival in the enigmatic village finally kicks off, with every participant donning a mask. Maomao chooses a fox mask, while Shisui opts for one resembling a tanuki. A legend tied to the festival reveals the area’s history: centuries ago, a group of outsiders tried to settle in this region but were mostly driven out by the locals.

However, a few remained, intermarried with the natives, and gave rise to a blended lineage. Over time, their descendants chose to live in isolation. Interestingly, many men and some women, among them developed a condition that prevents them from distinguishing colours. This peculiar trait hints at a larger mystery, especially since the first Regent Empress was known to have suffered from the same affliction.

Part of the celebration involves ritually burning the masks worn in the previous year. With the festival concluding smoothly, the story begins to delve into deeper plot threads. Maomao presses Suirei for the formula of the revival fluid she once used on herself. Though Suirei warns her of its dangers, Maomao’s curiosity leads her to request to be a test subject.

The episode also sheds light on Shisui’s troubled past, revealing that she endured physical abuse at the hands of her mother.

Toward the end, Maomao and Kyo-u find themselves in unexpected trouble after venturing too far into a forbidden area, an act that’s bound to have consequences.

The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 Episode 20 Review

This episode was really good as we saw Maomao getting herself in grave danger as she was discovered by Shenmei. Shenmei treats Maomao extremely badly and even decides to torture her to punish her gravely. That is when Loulan comes to save Maomao, and things get clear to her. Maomao realises that Loulan is none other than Shisui. Thankfully, she shields Maomao and even lies to her mother that she is an experienced apothecary who can create medicine for eternal youth.

In this episode, we also see things from Loulan’s perspective and see her having struggles of her own. She always tried to mimic her mother to try and appease her but never managed to do so. Her mother remained insufferable and controlling, with raging issues. She also continued to torment and mistreat Suirei because she was jealous.

Later, while talking to Suirei, Maomao finally connects the dots about Jinshi. She learns how it is very difficult to evade the eunuch exams, and understands that Jinshi managed to do it because he must come from royalty. But that is not all, Maomao also pieces together that the Shi clan is actually planning on causing a rebellion, which will ultimately cause a huge problem for even the innocents.

According to me, the best part of this episode is definitely when Lakan finally influences Jinshi to take control of the situation. Jinshi must drop the act and get ready to step up into his original and true role.

Verdict

Again loved this episode as it had intrigue, mystery and even promises that future events would go well. I know Jinshi will go to save Maomao and claim his seat as the crown prince. However, this decision might also hinder his romantic chances with Maomao.
