On September 23, Nene Royal was crowned the winner of America’s Got Talent Season 21, becoming the first Thai contestant to win AGT. This teenage singer and guitarist also took home the prize money of $1 million.
Somewhere between Zombie, Hysteria, Black Hole Sun, Seven Nation Army, a guitar, several loud cheers, and a performance with Linkin Park, there was a whole story unfolding. Royal was writing history!
AGT Gave Her a Stage; The Internet Gave Her an Audience
Nene’s AGT audition quickly became a defining clip of her internet run. Her Zombie performance earned four yeses from the judges, while the audition video reportedly became one of the most-viewed audition clips of the season, crossing 20 million views on the show’s YouTube channel. Her audition was one day before her sixteenth birthday!
Suddenly, the geography of her career changed: a girl from Phuket who was experiencing a stage like AGT for the first time while carrying a guitar since she was seven was now being watched by millions of people who had not heard of her before.
America’s Got Talent gave Nene Royal the stage to make herself visible, while the internet carried her performance to homes, and that is how a television appearance becomes a cultural moment.
X (formerly Twitter) is exploding with joy, celebrating Nene’s win. User @NidThisis called the win a historic moment for Thailand while congratulating Nene.
Another user shared a video of the social media live from America’s Got Talent’s page where fans were seen celebrating with emojis.
The Internet Had Already Crowned Her
Even before the official result was announced, the affection building around Nene was most visible. X user @Trecopo1, ahead of the finale, wrote, “i never saw this coming Nene Royal is proving to be the fans’ favourite and she might actually win AGT 2026 tonight” while also adding that she does not just perform, “she dominates”.
Then came the actual announcement!
User @TarArchwin celebrated both Nene and the people who had supported her, writing, “Congrats to Nene Royal!”
The pride kept spilling all over social media. Another user, @CandymanBKK, congratulated Nene as this year’s AGT winner and wrote that Thailand is proud of her, before adding the beautiful “Rock on Sister”. User @HeyNat shared the pictures of America’s Got Talent winner with “We are so proud of you, Nene.”
These reactions are not the reason Nene won. The winner was determined through the show’s public voting system, but they do capture something that the result cannot solely tell: that people had begun to be emotionally invested in the person behind the performances.
There Was Linkin Park
Before the result was announced, Nene performed The Emptiness Machine with Linkin Park. She was joined on stage by Emily Armstrong and Mike Shinoda who joined her, giving Royal a surreal full-circle moment on the same night she was about to become the AGT winner.
There is something cinematic about the entire presence itself: the girl who started her guitar journey at 7; who once played to people in Phuket; who showed up to an American television audition with a guitar and Zombie, and was sharing her stage with Linkin Park just months later.
Nene Royal Won, But Staying Nene Might Be the Bigger Story
Nene Royal won and most definitely created history, etching her name into the books people would read for ages. She is now the first Thai winner of America’s Got Talent at 16, winning US$ 1 million as the prize money and a source of enormous celebration in Thailand.
We have these facts, but art is beyond facts. The thing I keep coming back to is how little Nene seemed to need to negotiate with herself to be accepted: she was herself. She did not walk to the stage and spend her run trying to be some other version.
She did not abandon her guitar or the rock to have an easy journey; she did not become a generic pop singer for a global audience to understand her. She showed up as a rock girl from Phuket and remained herself until her last performance.
Honestly, we must introspect on how we spend so much time asking artists to be unique, but the moment someone is unique, there is always the temptation to make it more accessible, marketable and familiar. Nene’s AGT journey perhaps worked in the opposite direction. The more clearly she sounded like herself, the more people seemed to listen, and perhaps that is the real lesson hiding under the win: your uniqueness is not something you overcome, but something that makes you an artist.
