The 16-year-old Thai singer and guitarist walked onto the AGT stage for her grand finale performance and chose The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army, which is a song that arrives with its own bunch of expectations. You have heard it wherever someone wants to communicate that “Rock Music is happening”, and thus, taking that song into an AGT finale and making it feel like your performance is not a small assignment.
Nene Royal, however, understood the assignment and got everyone to scream at the top of their lungs for her.

What makes Nene’s AGT journey interesting is how clearly she has built an identity around rock rather than simply using rock songs as a vehicle to show off her vocals. She came with Zombie for her audition, Hysteria for Judges’ Callbacks, and Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun in the Quarterfinals gave her a Live Golden Buzzer and a straight entry into the finale; and for the finale she had Seven Nation Army.
There is something appropriate about the choice: the song is instantly recognisable, but Nene’s version was still built around the things that make her performances very “Nene coded”. The guitar, the attitude, her vocals and the little feral stage energy that makes her look like having fun more than anyone else.
She performed in a striking red look, guitar in hand, and the performance escalated into a rock spectacle. The audience and judges were seen erupting in response, followed by a standing ovation.

The reaction came from @pam_sareesuth, who in no way seemed interested in pretending to be normal about what she had watched. “Chills”, she wrote, praising Nene’s confidence, vocals, guitar skills and the shred riff before declaring, “100/10. She is a SUPERSTAR. Win or not, she’s going to be a superstar. And I can already see her going on tour.”
The emphasis on guitar matters here, as Nene does not just stand with a microphone while someone else gives her the music. The guitar is an important part of her performance language and speaks a language of its own.
Another user, @ShimBo84, called Nene one of their favourite AGT acts of all times, praising her voice, guitar skills, stage presence and her song choices. They wrote, “Seven Nation Army!” C’mon! She deserves to win! Vote for her! Vote #NeneRoyal!”
Another X user, @east_easy, focused on the fact that Nene is only 16 and there is something genuinely fascinating about remembering that. At an age when most people are still figuring out how to exist in a group photograph without being awkward, Nene has spent the last few months performing on the biggest talent-show stages on television.

Perhaps the most striking thing about the Nene Royal phenomenon is how quickly the story unfolded. A 16-year-old is now standing under the lights at the AGT finale, playing one of the most recognisable rock riffs of the 21st century with a live audience as an AGT finalist.
The response on X ranged from disbelief to celebration, with fans highlighting both her age and the fact that she is representing Thailand on one of the largest international platforms.
Nene Royal Has Got the X For Herself
Nene Royal’s Seven Nation Army performance is not interesting because it is a famous song on a famous show, but because the performance feels like another step in the creation of an artist who has already discovered herself.
The timeline’s collective loss of composure is perhaps the most accurate review of all. Nene Royal came into the finale with a guitar, a riff everybody knows, and something difficult to create: an identity, and that was enough for the entire internet to scream in unison: SHE WAS GOOD!
