Euphoria

Following a group of high school students getting into terrible situations, the series tells a story about teenagers who are deeply traumatised by their parents. While the show isn’t plot heavy, it focuses on character responses and dynamics while showing the most extreme vices of teenagers in honest brutality. Zendaya stars in this show as the protagonist, the linchpin in this town of drugs and debauchery. There is crime, a lack of innocence and some disconcerting people. Euphoria is currently streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar.

Never Have I Ever

Four high school students try their best to cross the hurdle of unpopularity in order to climb the social ladder. When the main character Devi starts behaving like one without consequence, her friends are right there to remind her what it is like being sidelined. Following friendship, romance and identity, this series uses voice over and characters as tools to tell stories of certain character archetypes. Never Have I Ever is currently streaming on Netflix.

Riverdale

A murder occurs in the town of Riverdale and the police officers are indifferent to the kind of problems that lurk behind this benign death. It is at this time four high school students take the reins of the situation and try to solve the case. Obstacles and hurdles cause problems in the professional and the personal front, leading to a loss of both friendship and romantic relationships. Riverdale is currently streaming on Netflix.

Teen Wolf

For the people in Beacon Hills, this is a normal town. However, lurking under the surface is a whole world of supernatural creatures that the main character Scott has no idea about. One day, after getting bitten by a wolf, his life changes. Things are coming easy to him and he’s getting stronger. Power has consequence and this time a plethora of dangerous creatures start stepping into Beacon Hills. Teen Wolf is currently streaming on Netflix.

Elite

When three scholarship students make their way into one of the most prestigious and extravagant private schools of Spain, Las Encinas. The show focuses on class discrimination and the kind of social life that comes with an exorbitant amount of money. Fitting in is already difficult but when a murder occurs on school grounds, things have completely changed for the three protagonists who are the prime suspects. Elite is currently streaming on Netflix and also has a Hindi remake titled Class, also available on Netflix.

The Vampire Diaries

When orphaned Elena comes to Mystic Falls in Virigina, she did not expect to make an instant connection with her classmate Stefan. She thinks he’s just a normal human but time reveals that he is actually a 162-year old vampire whose brother is back with a penchant for revenge. Damon Salvatore is ready to avenge his love and finds it in Elena who looks exactly like his ex-love. But that drama is not the only thing in their lives, monsters and men both seek revenge in this convoluted storyline. The Vampire Diaries is currently streaming on Netflix.

Sex Education

Main character Otis’ mother is a sex and intimacy therapist and a laughingstock among the people in his school. However, when Maeve Wiley asks him to start a sex clinic with her so she can make some extra money, Otis cannot say no. The show focuses on the lives of these students who are curious about sex, looking forward to learn something about it even when other people are too ashamed to do so. Sex Education is currently streaming on Netflix.

Heartstopper

School student Charlie Spring has been paired up with his senior Nick Nelson. Even though Charlie knows that Nick can only be straight, he still crushes on him because of his soft and kind demeanour. Little does Charlie know that Nick has also just begun to think of himself differently and maybe that information will lead to something more between the characters than just friendship. Heartstopper is currently streaming on Netflix.

Cobra Kai

Contunuing from the 1984 story of The Karate Kid, this series follows the defeated Johnny Lawrence as he decides to get back up on his feet and teach his teenage neighbour Miguel Davis about the Cobra Kai philosophy of Karate. Daniel LaRusso, has been thriving since he defeated Johnny but is now struggling to make amends with his children after his stint in sadness following Mr. Miyagi’s death. The rivalry dormant for so many years comes alive in this show. Cobra Kai is currently streaming on Netflix.

Yellowjackets

Following a terrible plane crash that left four incredibly talented soccer players stranded in the wilderness, the show focuses on their adult counterparts recalling this story 25 years later detailing all that they had to do to survive a punishing environment like that. Surrounded by cannibalistic clans and wild animals looking for prey, the show follows the nineteen months of their lives when they were lost. Yellowjackets is currently streaming on Voot.

While these shows focus on people with completely different living experiences than most of us have, it is interesting to see how their lives intersect with one other and how being thrust into difficult situations as children, dictates the way they act as adults.
