Premiering on May 24, 2023, Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 11, titled ‘Mom City’ has a runtime of 69 minutes with a synopsis that reads, “An unexpected guest has Ted on edge. When Richmond travel to Manchester for a big match, Roy and Keeley become concerned about Jamie.” It has been written by Joe Kelly.

Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 11 Synopsis

So… Ted’s mom is in town, and so is supposedly ‘Nate the Great’. Working at his favourite restaurant alongside his girlfriend, he’s approached by Isaac, Colin and Will, who come to see if he’d be interested in coming back to Richmond.

With their match with Manchester City approaching soon, Jamie is not feeling so good, considering how he left his former team, Manchester City for a reality TV show (but of course that’s not all to it). Ted is left dazed and confused over Mama Lasso’s sudden appearance, but he’s not the only one reuniting with his mum this episode.

As far as Richmond is concerned, they’ve won 15 matches in a row and only two matches remain to determine the ultimate result. With the next one up with Manchester, Roy instantly picks up on Jamie’s unusual actions, and calls in Keeley for help.

That said and done, it’s also that time of the year when Rebecca reveals something to Ted, but the roles are reversed for possibly one last time along the ride.

Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 11 Review: Discussion

First thing’s first, how did the whole Nathan thing resolve itself so quickly? it almost makes you feel as if a lot of things are happening off-screen, and it puts out an incoherent and inconsistent pacing issue that has been magically resolving every issue along the way this season. For once, I even thought that first scene was actually a dream sequence because of how ill-timed these conclusions have been.

Moving on from that, with this entry, we witness a switch-up from the portrayal of father-son relationships to the mother-son dynamic. Despite the differences in Ted’s relationship with his mother, Dottie, and the one shared between Jamie and his mum, they come quite close to reminding us how tender each of these bonds are, even if it may seem otherwise initially in the former case. Both instances present us with healthy interactions that count on communication, even though one of theme may haves missed out on it formerly.

Going back to Manchester City, Jamie’s emotions are riled up thinking about his father being in the stands. The episode finally addresses the elephant in the room after having forgotten about it for most of the season. Moreover, this also brings him closer to Roy and Keeley, as the trio form a close-knit family of sorts. The last scene shared between them and Ted checking in from a distance to see if Jamie is holding himself together or not calls back to him chancing upon his abusive relationship with his dad in the first season.

It’s been well established for quite some time that the series has a grasp on how to reminisce and take us back full circle to highlight the character as well as story development that’s occurred so far, and it happens again in this episode. In that way, the whole third run was setting us up for the upcoming season finale that’s possibly tilting towards removing Ted from the equation.

It goes back to the idea that his work here is done, especially with all the ties and relations now mended and him having built up a positive club-wide culture. So comes the major confessional drop from his mother that his son misses him deeply, and we all know what it’s leading up to.

We’ve all known since the season first commenced that the inevitable end would revolve around him going back to the States, but now that it’s in sight, it couldn’t have hurt me more. It’s bittersweet to bid farewell to such a heartwarming series, regardless of how Season 3 may have gone through a change up in its tone.

A lot of fans have been counting on Ted and Rebecca getting together, however, let’s be clear with how something like that hasn’t been overtly stressed upon. Instead, we’ve seen them helping each other out as friends, and that works in the best interest considering we don’t have enough of good and healthy onscreen friendships between men and women.

The possibility of them getting together was maybe there at the beginning of the series, because that’s what we’ve become accustomed to surrounding the whole enemies-to-lovers trope. But, now that we’re here, their story falling into the same trap would’ve been just another crowd pleasing cliche. Their characters stand tall individually so well that they don’t actually need this romance to complete their respective arcs, but a friendship on the other hand is exactly what they needed.

Before wrapping this up, might I add that Phil Dunster has been absolutely amazing this season. However, it’s a shame how barely any proper time was invested in fleshing out his story this time. We got to see good parts of him throughout, but didn’t get an insight into how and what led him up to that. And when finally his latent insecurities are being addressed, they’re done so at the penultimate step, as if to only make sure that his story isn’t left behind before the season wraps up.

At this point in the journey, it’s evident that Season 3 has had his share of misses. However, when you sit down to watch a series like this, one that is so close to your heart, it’s equally difficult to critique and pick it apart because of the love you have for its characters.
