Insomniacs After School is a romance and drama anime based on a manga written and illustrated by Makoto Ojiro. The series is animated by Studio LIDENFILMS and is also known as Kimisomu Episode 8 and Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia Episode 8 in original Japanese.
The Astronomy Club suffered a terrible tragedy when one of its members committed suicide some time ago. The club and where they used to work, the observatory, are all lying empty without use. It is the perfect scenario for two outsiders who don’t know a better use for their time to accidentally meet and go on a journey that would change their lives forever. They haven’t lived much of their lives, to begin with, so it’s not that big of a deal.
Grumpy insomniac Ganta Nakami stumbles across the moderately rebellious yet easygoing Isaki Magari in the Astronomy Club’s abandoned observatory. Magari is surprised and tries to avoid a confrontation, only to be stopped by a broken door, forcing the two of them inside. The two forge an unlikely friendship, leading them to use the observatory as a safe space for them to interact and discuss the one thing that ails them both- inability to sleep.

Ganta accomplished something big in the previous episode, and this is also something that is going to drive the rest of the plot forward. Ganta and Isaki talked about the origins of Isaki’s insomnia, and using that knowledge and some experimentation, Ganta was able to make Isaki feel safe enough with him around to make her fall asleep even when she wasn’t with him. As anyone with insomnia knows, that is a euphoric feeling that doesn’t happen much.

We are still yet to explore what makes Ganta’s insomnia as strong and debilitating as it is, and we need to get into that soon if we are going to see him get a good night’s sleep while we still have this show ongoing. It appears that his dad might have a lot to do with his condition, and he doesn’t appear to have his mother in the house. What trauma led to Ganta having insomnia, and can it even come close to Isaki almost dying when she was young?

Ganta and Isakihave another heart-to-heart where Ganta reveals he would have never considered doing something like this if it weren’t for Magari, and Magari tells him about the near-fatal disease she had as a child that is the cause of her insomnia. Ganta then devices a plan to help Magari sleep.
