Take 1 Review: Korean Docuseries With Legends and Idols Bringing Their Ideal Performance

Netflix’s musical docuseries Take 1 is here to take us to the final stage that legends and K-pop stars choose for themselves. Created by Kim Hak-min, the show stars artists from different genres like Sumi Jo, RAIN, Yoo Hee-yul, MAMAMOO, AKMU, Yim Jae-bum and Lena Park.

Take 1 brings a chance to create the stage of their dreams that they would like for their final performance and choose one song for the same that has to be performed in just one take.

Netflix’s synopsis of the show reads:

From a world-class prima donna to influential K-pop icons, celebrated musicians get one shot to give one song the performance of their wildest dreams.

-Take 1 Review contains Mild spoilers-

Take 1 starts off with a question for the world-renowned musicians on the show, “What if you had only one chance to present a perfect performance before you died?” And this comes with one condition- do it in one take.

The show brings a new musical legend or influential K-pop star in every episode and presents this choice to them which brings them to make the tough choice of selecting just one song for this legendary performance.

With some stars having a tough choice selecting their song, there are others who have a hard time coming back to the stage after years of hiatus. However, watching them get over the barrier and perform once again really brings joy to viewers who haven’t heard of these names.

With the world-class prima donna Sumi Jo bringing a goosebumps-inducing performance and Yim Jae-bum moving us to tears by appearing on the screen once again, RAIN aka Jung Ji-hoon and Yoo Hee-yul bring laughter to us.

With Jung Ji-hoon and AKMU’s Lee Chan-hyuk bringing in their massive ideas that create stages that really make us go wow, Lena Park does not fall behind as she takes busking right in the middle of the water. And with MAMAMOO ending the show by reuniting with their fans on a stage that shows their 7-year journey, we can say that this show will only have you keep going to the next episode.

Summing Up: Take 1

If you are a fan of music then this is for you, however, if you are a fan of Korean music then this is definitely for you! I personally enjoyed this show because music is something that exists without a barrier and to enjoy it you just need to feel it. And when you get to see the hard work put behind these performances then it touches you even more.

The subtitles are really good and they have been given translations for the songs which makes them even more appealing to the audience. And looking at the interaction that these artists have with their audience adds another layer of enjoyment, I would personally suggest you check out Yoo Hee-yul’s episode for the best interaction.

  1. I loved Yim Jae-beum performance as I am a fan of him and BTS. His appearance after a long hiatus made me cry so much. He related to his audience with the legendary song “This too, shall pass”. I hope he can continue to sing and make original songs for himself and people who heal with his voice. The loss of loved ones can take a toll on one’s emotion. I hope he can sing again for himself. It is and still would be one of his best performance.
