Subteran Review

Subteran follows a single mother who is an IT specialist with a cop for a fiance. Living a normal life, everything changes for her when her fiance is shot dead by the Bucharest criminals. But this is only the beginning because she soon gets caught in a bigger mess and is forced to go undercover to fight these criminals and catch hold of their weakness to save herself and her family.

I have to start with the fact that I absolutely loved how the story flowed throughout the show. It doesn’t follow a very idealistic thriller plot but instead takes the realistic path, which means that people are brutal and corruption is everywhere. This Romanian thriller has done it right in many ways and you will find yourself moving to the edge of your seat during many scenes.

The female lead is not someone who faces a sudden shift from being naive to becoming a hero in the next second. She is a normal working woman but is the daughter and fiance of police officers and knows how things work in their field. She knows the danger and also how to face it when given no other choice. And her IT background only makes things easier for her to a certain extent, though I don’t know how much of it is true because I’m no professional.

On the other hand, I have also enjoyed how it doesn’t make a shift into a romance drama. We have to agree, that a woman who’s lost someone dear to her and a man who is an undercover cop and is now helping her through this ordeal has always smelled of an incoming romance. But not here and I have never been so glad because the only chemistry existing between these two is of two strangers caught up in the same mess and now have no choice but to help each other out of it. And yes, they’ve done it so well that I have loved every bit of it.

The plot is wonderful, and ruthless, and shows how things can get in the criminal world. The ending in the real world is not always a happy one but is made on a consensus where both parties agree to not touch each other’s turf. Though the injustice may irk viewers to some point, this is what we call a realistic ending.

Moving on, I have to talk about the smooth camerawork that has only made my experience watching this show a good one. It wasn’t too shaky and brought out a flow that made up for a smooth experience. Meanwhile, the performance put together by the cast is also worthy of praise and if this is how Romanian thrillers are made then I wouldn’t mind watching more of these.
