Student Of The Year – After Dark Trailer Releases: Winning Does Not Seem To Be Central This Time

Student Of The Year – After Dark Trailer Releases: The trailer for Dharmatic Entertainment’s Student of The Year – After Dark brings back the corridors of St. Teresa’s, which we were introduced to in 2012 with the Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra, and Varun Dhawan starrer Student Of The Year, later taken over by Ananya Pandey, Tara Sutaria and Tiger Shroff. However, this time there appears a rather unpleasant complication with a mysterious death at the centre.

Ayesha Malik’s mysterious death brings her identical sister to St. Teresa’s High School in order to find out the cause and unveil the mystery. JioHotstar has released a 1 minute 50 seconds long trailer for the upcoming series, and while the contest seems to remain, the question appears to be changing to what someone might have done to get the trophy.

Student Of The Year – After Dark Trailer Releases With A Murder At the Centre

If you have grown up watching Student Of The Year, the first thoughts and visuals are of the fierce rivalries, glamorous students, romantic engagements and the pressure to be the best to win the Student of the Year title. The previous two parts revolved around the competition and what it means to achieve the trophy. After Dark, as it appears in the trailer, seems to be less interested in the winner aspect and more in the consequences of wanting to win desperately.

The trailer begins by revealing the death of Aayesha Malik (Shanaya Kapoor), a student at St. Teresa’s, whose body is frozen, but her identical sister, also played by Shanaya Kapoor, enters the school to find out the cause behind her sister’s death. She appears to be participating in the competition to investigate what really happened to Aayesha while revealing the people close to her, which include her best friend, her boyfriend, and her roommate.

The competition, being part of the investigation, appears to add an element of rivalry and alliances from the beginning itself. Ayesha’s sister is not entering St. Teresa’s with the same motivation as others. While the others would be fighting for the win, she has a much more personal reason to stay.

Everyone Wants to Win But At What Cost?

The trailer establishes a world of students in which ambition and rivalry are not just about outperforming the fellow students. With Aayesha’s death at the story’s centre, the competition becomes a case study to explore what happens when the desire to be the best starts having real-life consequences that are more than bruises and arguments.

The cause of the death is not revealed in the trailer, but Aayesha’s closest circle also appears to be a part of the competition, making the sister look at the closest ones rather than the strangers. She seems to be trying to uncover the truth about her sister’s death.

The trailer does not give us enough information to establish whether there is involvement of Aayesha’s close group in her death, but it does make the central conflict clear, which is that everyone has something to lose and to hide, and Aayesha’s sister is fully there to find out. The trailer also shows the series appears to lean into a murder-mystery format without rejecting the school competition that defines Student Of The Year since more than a decade.

Sheeba Chadha Brings An Emotional Layer To The Trailer

Amid the suspense and hints of crime, Sheeba Chadha features in the trailer for a very short time but stands out for a different reason. She appears to be playing the mother, and her presence brings an emotional dimension to a trailer that otherwise focuses on the investigation and dangerous atmosphere around the school.

Chadha’s emotional dialogue delivery is not just supported by tears but by rage, the hollowness of losing a child and the pain that follows. The brief glimpses of what appears to be a grieving mother hint at the family behind the tragedy and the mother who is questioning the events surrounding the death. Even though there is not much information in the trailer to understand the extent of her character’s role, Chadha’s presence adds an emotional thread to the premise of the series.

Student Of The Year – After Dark Seems to Look Beyond the Trophy

The trailer seems to try to establish a spooky, investigative tone, with the familiar school setting now connected to a mysterious death. It is still St. Teresa’s, still the Student of the Year, and still a group of students driving the story, but this time the story is considerably more serious.

Whether Student Of The Year – After Dark, directed by Reema Maya, can balance the murder mystery with the high-school rivalries that audiences have been associating Student Of The Year with for so long remains to be seen, but the change in the premise does give a different direction.
