Stranded With My Mother-in-Law Episode 1-4 Review: A Journey of Bonds and Breakthroughs

Stranded With My Mother-in-Law Episode 1-4 Review: Netflix is back with another reality show Ilhados com a Sogra, aka Stranded With My Mother-in-Law, and this time it is a new take with a rollercoaster ride of emotions that every family goes through after marriage, including the addition of a new family member in their lives. Couples come to the show, where they try to bond and stay on an island with their mother-in-law, with whom their relationship is not that good.

This show is hosted by Fernanda Souza. There will be six couples in the show with their mother-in-law – the Donatti family, the Sassone family, the Dunker family, the Castro family, the Tenorio family, and the Nery family. There will be eight episodes in this season, of which four have been released. The next four will be released next week.

Reality shows have always been cringy to watch. We always feel that the fights are fake, the lovey-dovey moments are too good to be true, kind of staged conflicts, and even sometimes unnecessary interactions. But in this show, it actually feels like we have seen this fight in real life; the concern, the care—it feels like people coming to this show actually needed this experience. The series is a reality check that will make you self-aware of relationships and the tensions one goes through. We’re only four episodes in, yet it seems the story and narrative possess promising potential.

For weeks, these couples will be living together with their mother-in-law. They will be performing tasks to survive and win the prize money. At the same time, they will get to work on their relationship with their mother-in-law. It was also very satisfying to see that all the people genuinely hate each other and don’t even try to understand each other until the tasks start. The show will concern you with the personalities of the participants that have been revealed on screen. Some you might like from the first go, and some you might hate it.

The way they interacted felt genuine. It didn’t seem like they were putting on a show, except for a few moments where it looked like the producers encouraged them to be nicer to each other despite their conflicts. Still, kudos to the producers for bringing together groups of people who sparked plenty of drama, whether it was good or bad. We really get a firsthand look at the insecurities and the hard work it takes to build a family bond.

It has been amazing to see some relationships getting better and to understand their concerns about what the actual reason was for them not liking each other. What is even more interesting is the mother-in-law, whose concerns are not very different from any mother in the world. Nevertheless, they accepted the challenge to work it out with their daughter-in-law and son-in-law. This provides a great opportunity to explore how family dynamics and relationships function and to explain them to audiences.

The only thing in this show that didn’t make me very happy was the design of the tasks. We have seen reality shows where tasks are designed and left as if they could have been done better. We know that the mother-in-law was a concern, but there is a much better way to test communication and relations. In the end, there is prize money, and everyone is fighting for it. The rest of the show is actually brilliant.

Moreover, the series does a great job of making something serious and much more relatable. The conversations of the participants will sometimes upset you, and some behaviour will feel ridiculous, sad, pathetic, and fake. We also come across relationships with a lot of indifference, which is actually the story of many families, but nobody speaks.

Apart from all this, they also have a great moral compass. Trying to work things out can actually help, rather than avoiding the conversation. The importance of respect and values in a relationship doesn’t stop with just their partners but is also needed with their families. There is no episode so far that will not make you think about family dynamics. At some point, you might find some problematic behaviour and people being unnecessarily rude, but it will be justified as it’s not the anger because of the show but what they have built up emotionally before the show.

Stranded With My Mother-in-Law Episode 1-4 Review: Final Thoughts

Reality shows are always full of drama, and when you include families, the drama increases. Stranded With My Mother-in-Law offers a refreshing twist on the reality show, delving into the complexities of post-marital relationships. It transcends the typical staged conflicts, providing a genuine look at the struggles and triumphs of these couples and their mothers-in-law.

The show’s potential is evident even in its early episodes, promising a compelling narrative ahead. While the tasks may need a bit of refinement, the series excels in highlighting the importance of open communication and mutual respect within families. It’s a mirror to many real-life dynamics, prompting reflection on our own relationships. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself deeply immersed in this emotional rollercoaster ride
