Spy x Family Episode 9 Review: Troubled Love Life

The meeting with Yuri seems not to be going so well as we head into Spy x Family Episode 9. Let’s see if Anya gets into the conversation, and things get more interesting in this review!

Spy x Family Episode 9 Overview

Spy x Family Episode 9 Title

Spy x Family, sometimes stylised as SpyxFamily, is an action and comedy anime based on a manga written by Tatsuya Endou and serialised in Shounen Jump+. The manga quickly became among the magazine’s most popular ongoing properties, and thus, an anime adaptation was inevitable. The anime adaptation is being tackled by Studios Wit and CloverWorks, and it would be an insult to your intelligence as anime fans to tell you the shows these two studios have made. You are already well aware.

The anime is being directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, who has previously served the same position in shows such as Dororo, HunterxHunter (1999), and Rurouni Kenshin. This episode of the show is also referred to as SpyxFamily Episode 9 and Spy Family Episode 9. You can read our review of the previous episode of the show right here!

Spy x Family Episode 9 Review- Kids Say The Damnedest Things

YUri Fork Spy x Family Episode 9

Yuri was right in saying that a kiss between a married couple shouldn’t be a big deal. Yor and Loid are raising a kid together, even if she isn’t really related to any one of the pair. It is more unrealistic to presume that Loid somehow overlooked this detail in his plan, one that threatens to destroy his entire mission in one fell swoop. He wasn’t to know that Yuri was a secret service agent before he had even met the guy, but any brother would assume his sister and brother in law to be as intimate and in love as possible.

That said, Yuri and Yor’s relationship is far from a normal sibling relationship. The duo are very close together to the point that Yuri seems to believe he is the only man good enough to be with his own sister. Their relationship, at least on Yuri’s side, borders on incestuous. However, it is never taken seriously and is more of a comic relief plot point than anything, thus making it somewhat tolerable. Tolerable doesn’t mean good, though. That is one part of the episode and the entire series that one wishes wasn’t brought over from the manga.

Spy x Family Episode 9 Yor Loid

This episode took the obvious way out in this scenario, ensuring that this relationship and mission lived on to see another day. However, that wasn’t without its consequences and resulted in Yor feeling inadequate for the rest of the episode. Because of something that’s more the writer’s fault than hers, she hasn’t received much in the way of character development from the start of the series. She has remained the same Yor while others like Loid and Anya have developed around her. That is not a big deal because Yor is amazing as she is, but her being its way causes a lot of strain in their family.

Introspection is one hell of a drug, and Yor consumes a lot of it in this episode. Loid plays more of a suspicious and careful role here as he is now aware of Yuri’s true identity, but that just makes things worse for Yor. Even Anya, who has admittedly been given a lot less screentime than usual in the past two episodes, is able to sense that something isn’t right with the couple. The show took a step back to reflect upon how weird and unstable this found family dynamic of theirs is, and it was a welcome sight to see everyone working on it and doing their best.

Spy x Family Episode 9 was a very sweet episode in many ways. Anya was great for the little time she was in there, and Loid and Yor proved once again how compatible the couple was. There were even some appearances by some old characters, like Yor’s coworkers. It was very slow-paced, and not much happened over the span of 22 minutes, but it was still pleasant to watch. If you miss Anya, do not fret as we return to Eden in the next episode. This was an essential episode that needed to be there for the sake of development.

Verdict

Spy x Family Episode 9 was a poorly paced yet fun episode that expanded upon Yor’s character and gave Loid and Yor’s relationship another pillar to stand on. A little less on Anya, though. Just a smidge.
