9 South Indian Movies Releasing on Pongal 2023: Varisu, Thunivu, Waltair Veerayya and More

Every South Indian knows that when Pongal is en route, the prominent actors’ movies will be all set to release and clash with each other. Pongal releases ultimately become the drama queen of South India, leading fans to create a ruckus to make one particular actor the G.O.A.T. That said, we have solid nine South Indian movies releasing on Pongal 2023, with top-notch actors who have always witnessed box office hits.

Will they break their records again this time or simply kill the buzz with non-sensible plots? We will know once the movies premiere. Let’s get ahead and mark our dates to watch our favourite action and romantic heroes flexing their acting on the big screen.

9 South Indian Movies Releasing on Pongal 2023

Theatrical Releases

Thunivu – January 11

After a long gap, actor Ajith Kumar, famously known as “Thala”, is back again with an action-packed film titled Thunivu. The word Thunivu literally translates into courage, so as the name suggests, we will see Ajith Kumar being all brave and bold while swindling a bank. Yes, the actor who has mostly been a good guy is back with another villainous role. Hopefully, we’ll have a backstory for his character development.

Varisu – January 11

Surprisingly the giant actors of South India have decided to release their movies on the same day. Nevertheless, the drama has already started between the fans of these two actors. Actor Vijay who has the title of “Ilaya Thalapathy” (God knows why these guys get these terms), is dropping his new film Varisu, directed by Vamshi Paidipally. Vijay acts as a son of a millionaire whose life soon changes.

Veera Simha Reddy – January 12

Veera Simha Reddy, starring Telugu cinema superstar Nandamuri Balakrishna, has already raised the fans’ expectations. A song video where Shruthi Hassan and Nandamuri Balakrishna are grooving also became viral. The movie will also feature Varalaxmi Sarathkumar in one of the lead roles. The entertaining movie has already received a massive response because the trailer did seem promising.

Waltair Veerayya – January 13

Like Tamil Cinema, the Telugu zone also ignited a battle between top stars. In Waltair Veerayya, Megastar of Telugu Cinema, Chiranjeevi leads the role alongside Shruthi Hassan (Girl legit acted simultaneously with two big rivalry stars). Similarly, both Telugu films are produced by Mythri Makers. What in the drama world is this? However, this movie’s response also was equally tremendous. Thankfully, both these movies are releasing a day apart.

Kalyanam Kamaneeyam – January 14

Directed by Anil Kumar Aalla, and starring Priyan Bhavani and Santosh Sobhan, Kalyanam Kamaneeyam is a romantic film showing the hardships of a couple. While both the leads are madly in love, the male protagonist is jobless, and the female lead does not appreciate his efforts to get a job. This movie’s release is a brave act among famous big releases like the above-mentioned movies. Let’s see whether it makes the cut.

OTT Releases

Thattassery Koottam – January 13

Thattassery Kootam is a comedy Malayalam movie starring Arjun Ashokan, Priyamvada Krishnan, Siddique, Sreelakshmi, Ganapathi and other notable casts, the story revolves around Sanjay (Arjun Ashokan) who falls in love with Athira (Priyamvada Krishnan) and their unfortunate events causing their lives to become chaotic. The movie will be available to stream on Zee5.

Mukundan Unni Associates – January 13

Directed by Abhinav Sunder Nayak, Mukundan Unni Associates, a Malayalam dark comedy starring Vineeth Srinivasan, is a film about Mukundan, a narcissistic fellow who only bothers about himself. He has a goal in his mind and would do anything to make it come true. The film will be available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.

Head Bush – January 13

Head Bush is a Kannada film starring Dhananjaya and Payal Rajput, the movie focuses on showing the political aspects of Bengaluru and the city’s first underworld don MP Jayaraj’s growth. Directed by Shoonya, the movie is releasing exclusively on Zee5 to watch.

Varalaru Mukkiyam – January 15

Actor Jeeva, who is loved by South Indian fans for his remarkable imitation of the North Madras accent, finally dropped a Tamil movie after ages. Though the movie was released in theatres on December 9, 2022, it wasn’t available for a long time; however it received positive reviews. This January, Varalaru Mukkiyam will be released on Netflix, and fans are completely happy with it.
