SkyMed Review: Nurses, Pilot and Lives To Save at 20,000 Feet

SkyMed is a Canadian television medical drama created by Julie Puckrin, starring Natasha Calis, Morgan Holmstrom, Praneet Akilla along with other actors. The plot follows the daily challenges faced by young nurses and pilot who are a part of an air ambulance service in the remote areas of northern Canada. While theses young people are out to save lives each day, they have to get along with each other while looking over their problems. The inspiration for this series was taken by Julie Puckrin’s sister and brother-in-law who are a nurse and a pilot.

IMDb describes the show as:

Follows intense character journeys and high-stakes medical rescues, heartbreaks and tribulations of budding nurses and pilots flying air ambulances.

SkyMed Review

SkyMed starts off with the introduction to the characters, the happenings in their lives and the today that doesn’t seem to be what they had hoped. What really pleases me about this series is that it focuses on the professional lives of the characters rather than their personal lives, So if you decide to watch this show for the medical and emergency care aspect, then you are at the right place. You will get a lot of content that has to do with unexpected situations like forest fires, hijacks, lost hikers, urgent deliveries to name a few.

Just because the focus is on this aerial paramedics team doesn’t mean that you won’t get any drama at all. The personal lives of almost all the team members are a mess and this gives us the dash of drama that we all love. The way they try to deal with urgent situations that can’t be overlooked while trying to fix their lives keep this series intriguing to watch. And I have to say that once I started watching it, I couldn’t stop. The show is fast paced and will not drag you on which means that there is no streak of irritation, though you might want to smack some of the characters on the face.

Another things that really caught my eye was the role of the Indegenious tribes. The way they showed the lives of this community while bringing out the racism that they face really lets you know more about the people today. The world is definitely not perfect but this show has done a good job is bringing out the racial discrimination face by the community even in the place that is their home. People has built up an image of these people and tend to believe in this stupid stereotype way too much which results in their rude behaviour. Even one of the characters, after finding out that he is one of the Indegenious, has a hard time accepting this fact but also starts to see the way the people behave with them.

The spotlight is also hit on the indecisiveness of many characters, who are just trying to find their way or face reality. Be it an engagement that doesn’t feel right, a possible cancer, or the responsibility of a child, these situations will keep your interest in what these people choose. Also, the characters are smart people and are able to make the right choices which are in the best interest of everybody.

Altogether, the creator has done a wonderful job with the show and I have to say this once again, I love how they focus on the professional challenges more than their personal problems. I like how the show is more about these nurses and pilots than the people who are in these roles. It is not easy being the part of an aerial paramedics team and these people deserve appreciation, and this is exactly what the show is doing.

Summing Up: SkyMed

SkyMed is worth the watch for those who really want a glimpse into the lives of nurses and pilots who are doing their duties even in remote places. It is a show to appreciate these professions and also the Indegenious community that has witheld their believes while facing troubles each day. The series is inspiring and entertaining which makes this something to not miss out on.

  1. The majority of first response medical is done by paramedics who are specialists in this field. Nurses are not Paramedics and vice versa. Yes there are flight nurses but in many provinces like Ontario, its Paramedics in the air or combined nurse paramedic teams. The writers need a paramedic consultant to catch some of the more ridiculous stuff in this series

    • While I can understand your point, this show is all about emergencies in remote places where you have to make a quick fix out of anything. The creator was inspired by her sister and brother-in-law when she made this show. So while some things may not make sense in reality, we also have to remember that this a work of fiction.

    • Loved this show UNTIL S1E4… disliked the portrayal of Trans sexual interludes as being OKAY. All Series, Game Shows and Movies made in the last couple years, have been compromised by the Theatrical Media…. by trying to send a message to ALL humans that this is okay. Just a matter of time before the Theatrical Media will exploit Sexual scenes with babies/children or with ANIMALS! As far as I’m concerned if I see even one scene on my TV exploiting this AGENDA…. I won’t watch it again and will WARN my family & friends to BEWARE also of this spreading Evilness!

  2. Yet another example of Hollywood drama that refuses to spend a few extra bucks to make this even a little bit believable. Skip it!
