Sicily Express Review

In Netflix’s Sicily Express, two bumbling men, adjusting to moving from Sicily to Milan for work, find themselves in possession of a magical garbage bin that transports them between the two places in an instant, and things escalate from there. The series, with a very short runtime, is steeped in local humour and culture, which highlights the differences between the North and the South, adding an interesting dynamic to the series.

The absurd premise is amusing and is perfect for the holidays, wherein a lot of people find themselves torn between losing their jobs and spending time with their family and friends. It’s wholesome in a way, as it brings forth the challenges of a long-distance relationship, as both Salvo and Valentino grapple with the consequences of the distance between them and their families and how it negatively affects them.

The tug of war between belonging and career plays an important role throughout the series. Embracing Christmas themes, the series brings forth the stress of holiday travel and the chaotic joy of family gatherings that, despite its flaws, fill the heart with warmth.

However, much like everything, too much convenience turns out to be painful, as the men face the unintentional downsides of having a magical portal in their homes. Valentino and Salvo face their own issues and battles, and despite having the convenience to spend more time with their families, end up in odd conflicts that result in them creating a huge issue for themselves.

I think, after all the funny business comes to an end, the series can get a bit repetitive and annoying, mostly because of the two protagonists who somehow can’t wrap their heads around being stable partners. They spy on their wives for no reason and are generally unlikable more often than not. Moreover, there are some moments when they make the weirdest decisions for no reason, which results in them getting into one problem after another, but they continue to stick with these outlandish decisions.

Either way, at 5 episodes, this one’s a light-hearted watch that’s a little over-the-top but one that fosters harmony and spending time with your loved ones. I think it ends well, with a nice little bow that seems reasonable and belieavnle in every way. I enjoyed watching the series more than I would’ve expected it. Maybe keeping your expectations in check is an interesting first step!

The quirky cast also add to the warmth of the show. Salvatore Ficarra and Valentino Picone are delightfully annoying in the series and make you annoyed yet root for them. The supporting cast is fun as well and although the short runtime hampers the character building a lot, I think it’s a mostly enjoyable experience regardless.

If you want light-hearted and uncomplicated Christmas cheer with some amusing conflicts sprinkled in, this one’s a good bet. It’s not perfect, but it’s enjoyable. In the end, you leave the experience with a smile on your face and a need to hug your family tightly, which is sweet. The series isn’t aiming to be a groundbreaking drama or a blockbuster comedy. It’s a charming and absurd show that hits the right notes to keep you entertained.
